Shelton HS Senior Banned From Prom: 'It Just Seems a Little Extreme' ................SC

James Tate thought he was being original in his prom proposal to a friend, but ended up in hot water with the Shelton High headmaster.

By Leah Salomoni

When a Shelton High School senior went out of his way to make a creative prom proposal to a friend, he never thought it would result in his being banned from the annual dance event altogether.

But that's just what happened after James Tate and two friends took a ladder, some tape and a handful of cardboard letter cutouts to the outside wall of the school’s main entrance.

“It was just to show my friend a grand gesture and I was wanting to do something fun and original,” Tate told Patch.

Early Friday morning, around 1 a.m., Tate taped the question “Sonali Rodrigues, will you go to prom with me?” in hopes that the message would surprise his prospective date and be a neat talking point for the day.

The good: Rodrigues said 'Yes.' The bad: Tate’s prom hopes were crushed when headmaster Dr. Beth Smith gave him and the two friends one day of in-school suspension.

“School policy is that if you get an in-school after April 1, you can’t go to prom,” Tate said.

Smith was not immediately available for comment.

According to Tate, Smith justified the punishment by telling him that not only had he trespassed on school property, his actions also posed a safety risk.

“It’s not like we broke into the school or anything, though,” Tate said. “And I wore a helmet and brought friends along to hold the ladder and hand me the letters with tape on them.”

Tate said that when his headmaster gave her sentence, he tried to “air grievances and make a compromise with the administration” to no avail.

“I understand their reasoning that there needs to be consequences against me to avoid students one-upping in the future, but I offered to collect litter around the school and argued other options,” Tate said. “Give me a week of detention, but don’t give me an in-school suspension so that I can’t go to prom. It just seems a little extreme.”

Tate said that he is upset. “I feel like a jerk for getting my friends in trouble and for screwing Sonali out of a date," he said.

Tate said Rodrigues will still attend prom, but with a girlfriend rather than him.

As for the outpouring of support for him on Facebook, Tate said he feels grateful to have so many people on his side, “but maybe it’s too little too late.”

Someone, Tate doesn’t know who, took to the social media site and created a “Let James Tate Go to the Prom” page on Tuesday night, which gained more than 1,000 supporters in a matter of hours.

“I don’t know if Facebook could persuade them to change their decision,” he said. “Anybody on a social media site can rant and rave but if it holds value – I don’t really know.”

In my personal opinion, I think this was a bit too harsh. I understand that he trespassed school property and that his actions posed a safety risk but to be BANNED from prom?? A once in a lifetime thing that every teenager looks forward to. I think that other forms of punishments could've been applied, without jeopardizing prom. Plus he did it with good intentions. JMO, what do you guys think?

Schools are getting rediculous, and if I could find the school's webpage I'd write a pretty harsh letter to the principal.
They will pick on anyone if they do one thing wrong..My god this kid is 18, and I think it was sweet but this school principal sounds like he was never asked to prom, and on a high horse. Or something stuck up their behind.

Right before my high school graduation, a few of the guys in my class PAINTED "Class of **" on the front of our high school (they knew it was scheduled to be repainted in the summer). I'm sure glad it was back then because according to "the new and improved education system" they never would have graduated.

God Bless.

Date: 5/11/2011 12:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 64765    I agree with you PsyGuy, It's ridiculous!! I think something should definitely be done in terms of reversing the punishment and allowing this kid to attend prom. I would totally understand if he broke in and stole or damaged school property, but for this?? Unbelievable!!!
Date: 5/11/2011 3:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 42703    schools are a joke anymore! My school let F.F.A. students walk around with pocket knifes during their annual fruit sale. I doubt that happens anymore, silly, silly, silly!
Date: 5/11/2011 4:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 31765    Way too harsh. Sometimes I'm honestly glad I didn't have kids, and have them going through the school system as it is now. Seems like all they want is to produce perfect drones...no personality allowed anymore. It's ridiculous. Man some of the things we did in school would cause a seizure to school officials these days, but you know...most of us turned out just fine. Home schooling just looks better and better as time passes and it's probably what I would have done had I had kids. This principal sounds like a real horse's butt.
Date: 5/11/2011 6:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 21903    Awww! Poor kid! He didn't do any damage, so I can't help but think it was a bit extreme. I get administering a punishment, but it sounds like he would have done some serious time to get out of being banned from prom. They should have made the deal with him! Boo.
Date: 5/11/2011 6:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 4144    School policy is that if you get an in-school after April 1, you can’t go to prom.......
he's a high school senior. he knows the rules. at what point do these people have to start taking the heat for their own actions?
it may seem harsh but whats going to happen when he's at his job out in the real world and goes aganist policy? maybe its for the best that he learn his lesson now and not later when he has kids to support.
