Volunteering and Community Service at the Zoo..........KRISTA

Let me preface all this with this statement: in order to graduate from my school, you need a certain amount of hours of community service. One way to do this is to join a certain club we have in our school that deals with community service, but when I tried to apply, the lady in charge told me they were no longer accepting applications (although she promptly accepted another application about half an hour later, and this was partially my fault-- I had waited a long time to apply). I've been looking out for volunteering opportunities since, and a Career Fair was recently held at my school. I spoke with a man who works at the Denver Zoo and he mentioned that they were accepting teen volunteers for the summer.

I can do this through summers until I'm fifteen (so, essentially next year) when I can work sometimes during the school year as well. This sounds great for me, as I want to get out of the house during the summer (because Sam will be getting a job and my parents both work full-time) and I love being in Denver and at the zoo. The only issue with volunteering is that there's a $50 tuition fee for work that I'm going to be doing for free (I know that there's a uniform involved for the job, and I'm fairly certain that the $50 will pay for that, at least).

I was wondering if it's normal to have to pay a tuition fee to do teen volunteering at any place. If not, can anyone here think of a good place for a 14-year-old to do community service during the summer (and possibly occasionally during the school year)? I'm really set on the zoo, but I'll only do it if it's the absolute best option. Thanks.

-USM's Zookeeper, Krista

Date: 2/19/2011 7:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 28767    the 50 fee is to cover the outfit that they will have to provide for you. so thats normal. im sure you get to keep it. 50 aint to much.
Date: 2/19/2011 7:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 28767    also i don't think a community service that says they do volunteering adn say that they are no longer accepting application's is not one I would choose to volunteer for. They should never stop taking application's. When I volunteerd for my highschool I worked at a nursing so. I never met so many cute old people. Except the occaisional grumpy one, but they usually had dementia.

But, I met this sweet old lady who was actually in the holocaust. Can you believe it. Her stories were so sad. But, her out look on life was so amazing. Getting to know those people was one of the best oppurtunities. All you do is sit there and talk to them.

I still volunteer at the humane society it's free. I love walking the dog's because no one else gives them attention. All they get a day is usually only 10 minnute walk manadatory. I take each dog out atleast an hour a day. I'm only suppose to volunteer two hours a week. But, I do way over that because I really enjoy the animal's. They are always taking application's.

That doesn't seem hardly fair to me.....and even though I know you want to work at that zoo...the $50.00 tuition fee doesn't sound right since you are a minor and volunteering, doing community service as a prerequisite to graduation...I would check out other places.....do you enjoy working with people also? You could think of volunteering at the hospital or a convalescent home for the elderly or disabled.....also gas prices are supposed to rise again...there are a few things to consider, but I find it unusual for a school to require community service as a requirement for graduation...much less a business requiring a fee in order to volunteer...I'd check elsewhere sweetheart...maybe a vet clinic if your heart is set on working with animals.....Best Wishes!~....T/C
Date: 2/19/2011 8:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 46486    I would look somewhere else. Perhapes a long term care facility (Nursing home, which I don't like using the name because its degrading.) I'm sure you could community service atleast with dinner time after supper or even activities.
Date: 2/20/2011 1:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 13138    Ky-Bluebird, I think it is a newer thing. I was surprised to learn that my high school daughter has to do volunteer community service to graduate too. I thought it was only here in our city but once I started asking friends/family rom all over, it seems to have spread. I guess it is an okay idea, but kind of a pain in my bottom as I have to get her to and from wherever she chooses to volunteer at in addition to everything else this busy mom of 3 has to do. Krista, the zoo thing sounds like a good time. My daughter would love it if they had something like that here. She will probably serve her hours helping at her little brother's elementary school. Whatever you choose, have fun!!! Take care,
