Do you look at the keyboard when you type?..........Krista~

I just realized that I never look at the keyboard when I type. It freaks me out and I have to always be looking at the screen or else I think I'm bungling all of the words I'm typing and that I'll have to retype everything, so I'm pretty neurotic when I type. I'll look down when I begin typing so I have a reference point for my hands and I'll look down when I do a special character or something (like an ampersand or octothorp) A lot of people I know type like Neanderthals but stare at the keyboard when they type. Conversely, some people will glance down every now and again for some unfounded reason (to check that their hands are still where they're supposed to be, perhaps?), and I think that this is probably the case with most people. I was raised with computers, so I know the keyboard like the back of my hand (hey, that's new!). So, lovely computer-savvy USMers, what's the relationship between the keyboard and your lovely eyes? Do you look or not?

Date: 12/20/2010 10:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 26303    Many moons ago, long before computers were in homes there were things called....typewriters. In fact, there were classes at school where students were required to learn how to type without looking at the keys. We had box like contraptions put over our hands so that we couldn't cheat and look. Some teachers were even known to rap the knuckles of students caught trying to peek at fingers. lol That was my era, so yes I type without looking at the keys. For my reference point I use the raised thingymabobs on the F and J keys. I type in the dark quite often. The only problem I have with this lap top is that it doesn't have a numberboard. So I do look for the numbers sometimes. Never did quite do well with them even at school. But am known as a touch typist. LOL
Date: 12/20/2010 11:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 23963    Nope don't look at the keyboard at all LOL... my typing speed at that is about 140 words per minute LOL.
Date: 12/21/2010 2:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 998    Nope I rarely look at the keyboard. I watch what I'm typing on the monitor though.

It is a bit strange .. if I'm in a dark-ish room .. I will try to look at the keys, even though I know where all the letters are .. LOL. It is kind of strange.

Date: 12/21/2010 4:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 16916    I don't look at the keys when I type. It messes me up. But what's weird is if it is dark in the room, I can't find the keys. LOL Even though I never look at the keyboard, if it's dark I find myself searching the keyboard. HA!
Date: 12/21/2010 5:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 64365    I'm not usually looking at my keyboard, but rather the screen, or elsewhere. Looking at the keyboard slows me donw.
Date: 12/21/2010 5:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 13546    I don't look at the keyboard when I am typing, I remember it was something we had to do in school years and years ago, they would cover our hands and test us. I guess it stuck with me.
Date: 12/21/2010 5:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 64723    I don't look at the keyboard... and half the time I don't look at the screen either. I'm pretty confident about my typing abilities, but just like Ginger and Kristina said if it's dark that does mess me up.
Date: 12/21/2010 6:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 44960    With the letters all jumbled up on the keyboard, I have no other choice but to look at it!... They really should fix this problem!!
Date: 12/21/2010 8:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 64593    Not typically unless it feels like my finger are in the wrong place. When I am typing something, it is often for school so I look at my books and notes a lot and type from those. When doing that, I usually do not look at the computer at all, until, as said, I feel my fingers are not in the right place.
Date: 12/21/2010 10:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 64514    LOL I look at both screen and the key board.
Date: 12/21/2010 11:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 16845    I watch the monitor. When learning to type in junior high they actually had us cover our keyboards and hands with towels.
Date: 12/21/2010 5:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 64765    When I took the Medical Assistant course they made us learn how to type average speed without looking at the keyboard. I eventually learned and can type pretty fast without looking at it but yet still have the habit of looking at it when I type
Date: 12/21/2010 8:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    I hated typing class! I failed a semester of it. I'm fairly good at knowing where all the keys are but I never got my margins set just right, thats why I failed. I can still hear that woman's grating voice j,k,l, sem (semicolon). I wanted to strangle her, her voice was so artificially cheery.

Date: 12/22/2010 12:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 26227    ohh man!!! I didnt look at the keyboard that time ^^^^^^
Date: 12/22/2010 5:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 21764    nope! thank you high school typing class!!!
Date: 12/22/2010 5:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 34476    I don't look often, only for certain symbols as you apparently do. i type way faster when not looking, and it is fun to look around the room, carry on a conversation or just watch what others are doing while i am typing. i typed this while looking around the room, just to see how many typos i have, lol.
Date: 12/22/2010 5:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 54570    Hunt and peck. Sometimes I can look down and do the two handed two finger method. Works just as fast.
Date: 12/22/2010 8:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 4231    I am similiar to you. I tend to look at the keyboard when I begin typing for reference sake, however after that I'm looking at the screen. I was also raised with a computer so my typing skills are good.
Date: 12/23/2010 10:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 53054    It really does depend if I look at the keyboard or not ... I find as I use the computer more I monitor the screen more than the keyboard and I may occassionally glance down when my train of thought goes, or when I am unsure on how to spell a word ... I remember at school I use to always look at the keyboard during speed typing classes, but now I stress less about making mistakes, as I know that I can correct them (which was monitored thru the program). Have a lovely day!
Date: 12/23/2010 3:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 43991    I don't look at the keyboard. I do sometimes with numbers but other than that.. Happy Holidays Krista!
