The Quran-burning fiasco

  Author:  19871  Category:(News) Created:(9/11/2010 5:12:00 AM)

It certainly is a big relief that the insane threat by the loony American charismatic Pastor Terry Jones of the obscure Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, to burn 200 copies of the Quran on Saturday 11 September 2010 has been aborted.

The worldwide widespread consequence of such a dastardly act is certainly inconceivable if it is actually carried out by the fanatical pastor and his 50-member strong congregation.

Jones, 58, is the infamous author of the anti-Islam book Islam is of the Devil, a polemic published in 2010, denouncing Islam as a violent religion.

He and his wife Sylvia have been teaching that Islam promotes violence and that Muslims want to impose sharia laws in the United States.

In 2009, Jones posted a signboard outside his church, stating that "Islam is of the Devil". His church members have also sent their children to the school started by the church wearing T-shirts with words stating "Jesus answered: I am the way and the truth and the life; no one goes to the Father except through me. I stand in trust with Dove Outreach Center" on front of the T-shirt, and "Islam is of the Devil" on the back.

In 2002, Jones was fined US$3,800 by a Cologne court for using a fake doctorate title, one of the very common practices even among some Malaysian pastors, especially those with no tertiary qualifications.

The “International Burn Quran Day” promoted by Jones has received widespread condemnations, from US President Barack Obama to our own Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. The leading world Christian organizations, such as the Vatican and the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), and prominent Christian leaders have also denounced the lunatic action of Jones and his church.

In Malaysia, among the first to voice its reproof and condemnation of the matter is the Council of Churches Malaysia (CCM), the coordinating umbrella body of the major denominations such as the Methodist, Anglican, Presbyetrian, Luthuran, etc.

How Koran burning story grew from obscurity

Pastor Terry Jones runs a church so small his entire congregation could fit onto a single bus. He is essentially the leader of a fringe movement.

Normally, the mainstream media does not cover the activities of obscure figures who are simply trying to grab attention. So how is it that Mr Jones's threat to burn copies of the Koran has come to preoccupy the world's attention?

The story began quietly in mid-July, when Mr Jones' Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida announced that it would hold an "International Burn a Koran Day" on 11 September. A Facebook page advertised the event.

I'm actually quite appalled someone even came up with the idea... This is from a Malaysian news online. Just google up International Burn a Koran Day... and it also demonstrates one point, that one very small but vocal group of people can capture the attention of so many others.

Date: 9/11/2010 7:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 47218    Yes, these groups are all about grabbing attention, and, one of these days, if they don't back down, they are going to learn that there is actually such a thing as attention that they don't want...
Date: 9/11/2010 8:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 11097    I have a lot of feelings about this whole situation. I am from New York, about a hour from Manhattan, and my father is a retired FDNY. When I first heard about the mosque near ground zero I wasn't sure how to feel... and I've heard all the arguments and I am still not sure how to feel. Not because I am against Islam or I am not tolerant or that I think Islam had anything to do with the people who are responsible for 9/11... I just keep thinking about the people that were killed and think we need to focus more on a memorial and how to bring this country back together again before there is a holy war right here in America.
I think the media gave this man way to much attention. He is using 9/11 to spread his hatred of Islam and that's disgusting. He is giving a bad name to Christians as well as America and he is spreading hate which is a complete contradiction to Christianity. If he was so against Islam, then spread your faith in love and light. Not by burning books. If he was so upset about the mosque be diplomatic. We just keep feeding fuel to a fire that is eventually going to explode into a full rage and we certainly don't need that. Thanks for listening to me opinion.

Date: 9/11/2010 12:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 52489    More than one thousand years since the Crusades, and some people are still learning the same lesson.
Date: 9/12/2010 8:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 64702    Burning a Kuran is as much as burning a Bible just because it's not written in YOUR language. The only time acceptable (I just assume it's the same with Islam) is like with the flag, when it is totally worn out beyond use. If he wanted to burn something worthwhile, why didn't he make it an image of Bin Laden! Since he's an outcast with the Church of Islam anyway too(he's been like excommunicated you might say) and the above would inticipate just where his soul is headed of that poor excuse of a human being. Date: 9/12/2010 10:32:00 AM  ( Admin )   As long as this guy gets attention he will do bad things.

People should also realize that God is not the book and the book is not God it's just paper.

There will always be people that cause trouble for the attention.
Date: 9/12/2010 6:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    I think it says something more about the people protesting and rioting than the actual person, leading a congregation of 30, who was going to burn the korans. To say that there is an over reaction is putting it mildly. But that's what I've come to expect from 'moderate' muslims.

It's nice to see liberals take a sudden interest in not trashing a religion though.

Date: 9/12/2010 7:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    I couldn't even begin to count the number of Book of Mormons that have been burned. No matter, the Lord's work will prevail!
Date: 9/13/2010 6:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    If it were not for media attention and politically correct hysteria no one outside of his immediate area and 40 or so followers would have been affected or even known it was taking place.

People are always looking for some reason to get all self righteous.

Date: 9/13/2010 9:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 19613    The pastor and the anti-mosque protestors should be condemned for trying to bully the Imam in New York to moving the center, the Imam should be condemned for trying to bully people by suggesting that not building the centre would give rise to anti-American sentiment, but most of all the media should be condemned for not bothering to expose the fact that the pastor’s actions are only generating headlines because people are afraid of violent Muslim retaliation.
Date: 9/13/2010 5:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 11240    I don't know anyone that is afraid of a violent Muslim reaction. I believe anyone with a grasp of reality expects as much. Of course the news will show a scintilla, or less, of said reactions. Afterall, there's nothing new to show . . .

God Bless.

Date: 9/13/2010 6:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    “I don't know anyone that is afraid of a violent Muslim reaction.”

You could start with the vast majority of Western media outlets which refused to reprint pictures of Mohammed in recent times, or with all the various politicians who came out pleading with Jones and condemning the burning of the Koran. How many of them felt the need to comment when PZ Myers stabbed a consecrated communion wafer with a rusty nail?

Date: 9/14/2010 8:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 11240    Like I said, I don't know anyone that is afraid.

God Bless.
