Burning the Quran on September 11

Today in the news, General Petraus was asking Dove Outreach Program in Gainesville, Fl. to hold off burning the Quran due to the possibility of stirring up more dissention in Afghanistan and putting troops in more harms way. Afghans even protested the burn on Monday, claiming, "Quran is our law, Islam is our religion." So far the church is refusing to back down.

I completely agree with the General. There's really nothing to accomplish by burning the Quran, only to anger these people and cause more hatred and violence. Unfortunately the people that will have to deal with this are US soldiers, not the morons burning the book.

Its only adding fuel to a fire thats been burning between the US and Muslims nations for decades.

Do you agree with the scheduled burn on the Quran on Sept 11?

Date: 9/7/2010 11:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 11097    No, I don't agree with it and like you said we need to stop adding fuel to the fire. It wasn't the religion that caused so much pain and destruction, it was the people who manipulated it. There should be no burning of any books. I actually signed a petition this morning about this, it's on a site called care2.com if you want to search for it.
Date: 9/7/2010 12:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    I don't agree with burning it, but it's wrong to suggest that it will put troops in harm's way. Being offended is no excuse for violent behaviour. I can burn the Bible tomorrow and I don't have to worry about being killed for it, the same should apply with the Koran.
Date: 9/7/2010 12:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 30093    I agree with it purely on the grounds of freedom of expression. Personally I think ANY book burning is idiotic and only shows how stupid the people are, but they have the right to be idiots.
Date: 9/7/2010 12:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 64365    I don't agree with burning anyone's Holy Books. For Gosh Sakes...what in the heck is that going to do but hurt people and make them mad. Why on earth would anyone stoop to something so freaking low. Would anyone like it if someone burned the Bible, or whatever book they deemed Holy unto themselves? For crying out loud! The only message coming across from that is that we could stoop to such childish idiocy.
Date: 9/7/2010 1:16:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 52140    Dark Phoenix, I agree with you that a reaction to burning the Quran should be the same as burning the Bible. However, you have to remember that their mentality is completely different from ours

Date: 9/7/2010 1:17:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 52140    Nanaki, I agree that freedom of expression is a right, but when it might incite more violence than good, its a stupid endeavor.
Date: 9/7/2010 1:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 53284    I think that it's wrong to purposefully disrespect other peoples religion.

We are a country that believes in freedom of religion so why would you burn another religions holy book? It doesn't matter to me if you believe in that religion on not, it's just plain rude behavior.

Date: 9/7/2010 1:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    Yes their Mentality is different, but people don't burn bibles either. I would not suggest burning the Quran on 9-11 cause that is going to rile them up and may end up having consequences...It has been in the news for a week now, so who knows they may have a terror cell ready to attack as revenge.

Also to the Christians who are going to participate in this, I think it gives a bad image to other christians.

Date: 9/7/2010 2:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 11240    Look, people, we are being set up for more confrontation by those who need this kind of conflict to deflect from the dismantling of ALL of our freedoms, not just the two obvious ones mentioned here. JMHO.

God Bless.

Date: 9/7/2010 3:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 15157    No...for Gods Sake!
Date: 9/7/2010 3:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 43807    those people need to think about those cartoon artists. Radicals don't mess around. THis is awful. IF there is a fallout, I hope the only ones who get the fall out are those in the church not an innocent.
Date: 9/7/2010 4:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 62146    Nanaki has a point, But I just don't understand how this dude said he wants to show islam americas are not going to be ruled by fear. Burning a book seems to be an act off fear, and a very strong reaction might that be. You gotta live a happy life despite what they did. This seems like revenge to me, and I don't agree with revenge.
Date: 9/7/2010 5:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 57579    People must understand that burning the quran is like burning the US flag. It is extremely offensive and like many people have said revenge is not the answer. I am not a religious person at all but I have read the bible cover to cover, taken classes, and I understand the teachings of Christ. Jesus taught love, not hate. Burning the Quran is an act of extreme hate. Also, it IS putting our troops in danger. Those countries are Islamic countries. They are ruled differently than we are. They are not under us they just have a different way of life. I am scared to death if they go through with their plans its going to open the door for something we dont want. We all just need to learn to live in peace and agree to disagree.
Date: 9/7/2010 5:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    Definately NOT!
Date: 9/7/2010 5:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 3680    It's not the fact that everyone should have the "freedom to burn books..." Think about the bigger picture. That action will only fuel the fire of radical Islam. Soldiers as well as western civilians will be put at risk. Right now there is a young Islamic kid teetering on peace or radical Islam, and this will help him choose a side. It will be used as a recruiting tool for terrorism. Christians burning the Quran is no different that the terrorists who use it as justification to commit murder of innocent women and children.
Date: 9/7/2010 6:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 30093    Extremists don't need propaganda. They only need hate and fear. This IS an issue of freedom of expression.
Date: 9/7/2010 6:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 22852    @}~~ This "man" makes me mad, I understand his feelings but I feel he is just looking for free TV time to boost his church. I have not heard of Muslims burning our "Bible" and the Quran is the Muslim Bible. I feel this man is just breeding more hate. Sadly he has put himself up against a wall, if he burns it, it causes trouble, if he doesn't burn it than the radicals will say "see they are afraid of us and we can control them" I can say this, may his God have mercy on his soul sould we lose any troops over his ego.
Date: 9/7/2010 6:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    If that "church" goes through with it, I would love to see another group next door to them burning the Bible at the same time. In a perfect world, it should be dissenters to the planned Koran burning from the same "church," using the "church's" Bible. That can show how far these people are from the True Teachings of Jesus.
Date: 9/7/2010 7:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    Oh, so NOT burning the koran will make the taliban stop killing Americans?? They'll throw down their arms and become peace loving hippies? ha ha. Now THAT'S funny!

I personally don't agree with any book burning, but I do have some qualms over a General, any General, getting involved with the issue.

Date: 9/7/2010 9:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 14464    I don't think that burning the Quran is going to accomplish anything other than make people mad. Also it sounds very childish to me
Date: 9/7/2010 10:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 62841    I do go to church, I do believe, but there is the fact that living in the United States means freedom of speech AND religion among other things. I do NOT agree with this burning of the Quran. That is just spreading hate and INTOLERANCE of other religions. I'm pretty sure this isn't what God wants, this isn't what Jesus wants for us. WE are supposed to be loving and accepting of others, not condemning and spiteful. What if this preacher, this "man of God" does this, and we end up with Muslim Extremist getting angry and end up in another war because they decide to attack the United States for this happening. Then all the troops, fighting to give us our rights get put back in danger, innocent people who didn't need to die get killed thanks to someone wanting to be hateful. Yes, in Christianity we believe that we are right, but that does not mean that they are worse than us. And why burn the Holy book of one religion just because you have SOME bad people in this religion. What about if some Muslims, here in America of all places, were to decide, "well we dont like how that Westboro Baptist Church protests soldiers funerals so because they are only ONE SMALL PORTION of believers then we are going to persecute the WHOLE of them by burning their Holy Book". Everyone would be up in arms, asking the GOVERNMENT to stop them, to ban them from doing this. So freedom has to go both ways. I wouldn't agree with the burning of the Bible, but for EQUALITY, they would have that right since we also have the right to burn the Quran. If the government managed to stop this guy from burning the Quran but didn't stop the Bible burning from my example, that would be very unfair. But the same could be said too. If they allowed the Quran to burn but not the bible that is also unfair to people's right. EQUALITY goes both ways, and hatred will get us nowhere. Just because you have the right to do something does NOT make it the right thing to do… “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do n...ot stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.”
—Luke 67-31. NIV

Date: 9/8/2010 5:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 60992    I think Misty said it all. So what is this general trying to do? Is he trying to teach Americans fight hate with hate? lets allow the hate to breed and fester until it becomes hate no more just violence? Its all okay until somebody gets hurt, or killed. It disguests me that somebody would go around burning a religious book. That to me is the ultimate act of disrespect. Too me that does not make you an American, everyone deserves respect. Their have been extremists in every religion who have done alot of harm but I guess because Muslims are easily visually picked out they're easier to pick on. Its unfair. Its easy to hate what you dont understand and fear or even know.
Date: 9/8/2010 5:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 27534    Protest is protest....one man's protest is another man's riot.
Date: 9/8/2010 6:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    It's just a book, printed by a printing company, not the hand of God. Same as a Bible, the words, the interpretation by the reader and their own faith are what counts.

So burning one may be unsettling, but in the mind of any rational person it shouldn't be a reason to kill someone. Violence comes from the twisted minds of the individuals who commit it. If it is violent Ilamists who commit those acts then it falls on their heads. Not anyone elses.

Burning a book doesn't put our troops in danger, fanatics who would kill over some percieved offense to their religion do.

Date: 9/8/2010 7:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 19613    "Burning a book doesn't put our troops in danger, fanatics who would kill over some percieved offense to their religion do." +100
Date: 9/8/2010 10:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 11240    Should any violence perpetuated by any Muslims erupt due to this publicity stunt, I would hope that just as much publicity would be given to how that then substantiates this man's point . . .

God Bless.

Date: 9/8/2010 11:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    I didn't realize this, but I just read this church is aligned with the vile Westboro baptist Church. So I guess I'm not surprised.
Date: 9/8/2010 11:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    I still don't think it's a good idea for a General and the State Department to respond to something like this. What happens if someone burns Scientology stuff??? Should Hillary Clinton and the Mayor of New York make comments against it? You know someone is going to burn bibles in retaliation, should a General, The State Department and Mayors from out of state get involved? How about when Harry Potter books were burned? Where does it stop? You can't help how people living in the stone age react, they'll never understand there is the freedom to offend.
Date: 9/8/2010 12:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    "What happens if someone burns Scientology stuff??? Should Hillary Clinton and the Mayor of New York make comments against it?" Comments which have probably brought the issue to the attention of crazies who otherwise wouldn't have known about the activities of some tiny church.
Date: 9/8/2010 2:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    well, that was the point, Dark Phoenix. It's elevating the issue to a governmental concern when it really shouldn't be. It isn't against the law. It's dumb, it's ignorant, but muslims in other countries aren't going to be mollified by what the mayor of New York or the Secretary of State have to say.
Date: 9/8/2010 2:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 19092    I'd burn one if I found it in my house. Islam is of the devil (IMO). But, I wouldn't make a scene about it. I'd just burn the darn thing...
Date: 9/8/2010 3:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 19092    I've burned Ouija boards too when I found them in my house...
Date: 9/8/2010 3:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 27414    NO!!!
Date: 9/8/2010 5:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    I agree 100% Kelly.
Date: 9/8/2010 6:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 62993    I think it's stupid and won't do any good, but then we do have freedom of religion and expression in this country.
Date: 9/9/2010 1:34:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 52140    Kelly, the point wasn't a hippy conversion. Its the point of adding fuel to the fire and inciting more violence.
Date: 9/9/2010 1:39:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 52140    Brilliant observation BCAR... Except you're forgeting one thing. You aren't dealing with rational people over there.
Date: 9/9/2010 1:57:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 52140    I'm all for freedom of religion, expression, etc. If its a freedom, I'm all for it. And I don't care if the government steps in or not, I think that as rational, mature human beings fighting against racism, fanatacism and terrorism, this act is really just as extreme as 9/11 (not in the sense of size, but the idea behind it). Its basically disrespectful. It also violates all that we are trying to accomplish over in the Middle East. Most of these people are confronted with the worst sides of America: racism, materialism, etc. And to see they're holy book burned, it will only confirm EVERYTHING that they already believe about us. I'm not saying that we should cater to their opinions, but atleast have some common sense: This will do nothing to improve ANYTHING. And I agree that it might just be a small church trying to get 15 minutes of fame. But this kind of cheap recognition isn't like William Hung where you get a cult following and a website... Its creates bigger problems when you look at the whole picture. And its downright selfish.
Date: 9/9/2010 6:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    Goes to show that there is moronic, hateful behavior from all sides here. I don't ever agree with the book burning, and I hope that the Muslim community doesn't react to this baiting behavior and takes the high ground, but no one seems to know what that is anymore....
Date: 9/11/2010 1:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 10722    Burning it? That's horrible.. I'd use it for toilet paper.
Date: 9/17/2010 8:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    I really do not see the reason for the burn, I know they believe they are making a statement but really what good is it?
Date: 3/21/2011 8:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 19220    I don't believe that it should be burned.
