The Downside of Fad Diets – How to Lose Weight the Healthy Way

It seems that every week, especially during the summer months, the latest celebrity weight loss ‘secrets’ or fast-track diets are promoted. However, the consequences and long-term results of these often risky weight loss methods are rarely mentioned. While it may seem tempting to try these fads to slim down for swimsuit season, it certainly isn’t worth compromising your health!

False Positives

Many of these lose-weight-quick schemes result in the shedding of water weight, which is quickly gained back once regular eating is resumed (one cannot live on grapefruits or a liquid diet forever!). In addition, starvation-type diets that may offer quick results are very detrimental to the metabolism and lead to subsequent weight gain- often leading to not only gaining back the weight that was lost, but increasing the original number on the scale!

Other Risks

While most harsh appetite suppressants and metabolism stimulants have been banned, others will surface, purporting to be ‘safer’ alternatives. However, be extremely cautious when considering these supplements, as they can cause long-term harm to all systems of the body. These unnatural weight loss supplements may also cause serious side effects, such as dry mouth, diarrhea, depression, insomnia, and anorexia.

The Natural Way for Lasting Results

Natural remedies can help promote weight loss, but they must be used in conjunction with a holistic approach to nutrition and fitness. Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosis), Dandelion (Taraxacum officinalis), and Licorice (Glycorrhiza glabra) help boost metabolism, plus improve liver and digestive functioning to help keep weight off. Malabar tamarind (Garcinia cambogia) is a natural appetite suppressant favored by those who have a hard time resisting sweets or excess snacking, and has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine.

While it’s not what most dieters want to hear, there is no secret to weight loss! The body must burn calories through exercise and a healthy diet must be followed, including lean protein, fruits and vegetables, and a balanced mix of other nutrients.

Identify Health Issues Linked to Weight Gain

If weight is a constant struggle despite diet and exercise changes, see your healthcare professional for a full evaluation. For instance, since metabolism is closely tied to proper thyroid and pituitary functioning, an imbalance or disorder may be hindering weight loss.

Date: 7/26/2010 1:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 52489    Diets don't work. The best way to lose weight is to eliminate your fat intake and increase your physical output. It's that simple.

I have recently lost 16 pounds. the way I did it was like this: My big meal is breakfast, lunch is medium-sized, and supper is very small. This way, I have all day to work off my food intake. My workouts consist of a heavy cardio program-- thirty or forty minutes on an exercycle or elliptical machine; followed by 1500 meters on a rowing machine, and then another 25 minutes of work with weights. Thirty crunches are done before bed.

Yes, it's hard work, but the pounds are dropping off, and I'm starting to attract interested looks from the ladies at my health club!
  
Date: 7/26/2010 2:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 26303    Touche! So very true. I worry when friends decide to go on those shake diets. Inevitablaly they end up putting on more weight once they stop. The only weight loss program that I believe in, if you need that extra help, is Weight Watchers. Their diet is healthy eating, plus exercise and they provide support too.
