Took a long walk all around my trails this afternoon. It was hot but sweating made me feel like I was accomplishing something as I walked briskly with my son Dillon. As I walked I took attention of what all was around us, cleared my mind of the nagging heat and took it all in.
The locusts were singing as we wound around more uphill than down thru the twisted vines and huge cypress trees intermingled with a number of different other trees around the pond stained red from the red clay, watching the turtles line up on wet logs, all in a line of the log sticking out of the water worshipping the sun on their shells, their heads stuck way out..if you walk too close they will all fall into the water and wait til you walk by to roll back onto the logs. Crabapples or horse apples as people call them are smashed and open and rotting in the harsh sun from being thrown to the ground in the wild winds that blow hard across Oklahoma everyday..I walk on and dodge the open fruit lying baked and black from the elements, on my path..
We pass streams that together formed the big pond that is the middle of the Park, they slowly meander thru the trees and trails, water bugs doing dances on twigs and leaves in the small currents..I remember that these are the spots that the horse drawn wagons and cattle drivers used on the historical Chisolom trail when the west was being settled, and to think Im walking where droves of cattle were ushered thru. Families in wagons ready to draw from the hard red clay, and red dust, fortunes and built up towns..Trees smelling in the sun, as they shade me on parts of the trail, ancient ones that were babies back when.
The park has put benches to sit on, on the cement path thru these trees, little bridges too stand on and look down the streams. Squirrels play everywhere, there are wild ducks, mommas and babies waddling on the ponds edges in the shade of a tree, as you walk by, they clamour their quacking hurridly at the babies as they bouyantly swim back into the depths of the pond, the babies following close behind.
Sweating, I walk towards the end of the trail, back where we started, glad to see the car parked and ready for the cool air I will turn on inside..ready to go quench my thirst and make a quick yet healthy belated lunch when I get home. Dillon takes off his headphones to his MP3 player and hands me the keys he was holding for me and we get into the car ready for our drink. Another walk accomplished til tomorrow, I can go home and cool off..The End How it changed my life:Its my workout and relaxation all at once.
