Writing Intelligently - Lesson One (Common Homophones) - - KRISTA - -

  Author:  63846  Category:(Discussion) Created:(6/13/2010 5:07:00 PM)
This post has been Viewed (2140 times)

After reading through countless numbers of posts and comments on USM, I've managed to pick out the biggest and most frequent mistakes I've seen and, from the goodness in my heart, decided to give you a series of lessons on these blunders.

Okay, let's admit it: most of us make a lot of mistakes, especially in grammar. Today, I plan on fixing these common mistakes. What I've compiled is a list of grammatical errors that I see a lot. Let's do this.

First of all, let's talk about "your" and "you're". "Your" shows possession. For example: Your dog is barking.

"You're" is a contraction for "you are". For example: You're a great friend.

DO NOT - I repeat, DO NOT - use "your" in place of "you're". When I see this happening, I want to scream. DON'T DO IT.

If you're ever curious about which one is correct, see if "you are" would fit. If it does not, then it is "your". If it does, using "you're" is appropriate.

Now, let's look at "there", "their", and "they're". "There" indicates a place. For example: Go over there.

"Their" shows possession (to be specific, the possession of "they"). For example: Their friendship was everlasting.

"They're" is, clearly, a contraction for "they are". For example: They're going to the movies tonight.

If you're ever confused, check if it is indicating to somewhere first. If it is, use "there". If not, check if "they are" is appropriate when you use it in place. If so, use "they're". Otherwise, your only option left is "their".

Here's one that confuses a heck of a lot of people: "it's" and "its". "It's" is a CONTRACTION for "it is". It NEVER shows ownership. Example: It's very cold out.

"Its" shows ownership for "it". It does NOT serve as a contraction. For example: Its color was a pale blue.

Another big issue is "two", "to", and "too". I'll get this one over with as quickly and painlessly as possible. "Two" is a number - you know, the one that looks like "2". I'm not going to give you an example for it because I'll trust you know the meaning.

"To" is a preposition. I'm not sure how to describe it, so I'll give you a huge bunch of examples: Go to the store. They counted to sixty-three. They went to the movies. I wanted to eat an apple.

"Too" is DIFFERENT from "to". "Too" means "also" or "as well" and is usually stuck on to the end of a sentence after a comma. For example: I went to the store, too.

If you get confused (God forbid you don't know where the word "two" is appropriate), check if "as well" fits in place of the "to" or "too." If so, I can guarantee it will be "too". If not, it will be "to" (provided the word isn't "two", and I'm sure all of the USMers are past THIS adolescent mistake).

This one isn't used as often, but is frustrating nonetheless: "right" and "write." Let's look back at fourth grade: "right" is either a navigational term or denotes correctness. For example: Go right on Cherry Street./Your answer to the question was right.

"Write" is the verb meaning to form (letters, words, etc.) on a surface. For example: She was told to write the spelling word on the board.

I believe it's also important to know that it's seldom correct to use "wright" unless you're speaking in terms of "one who makes or constructs".

I'm not sure this would be a homophone, but I absolutely HAVE to fix this. I mentally CRINGE every time I see "could of". I am going to make quite a point of this:

COULD OF, WOULD OF, AND SHOULD OF ARE NOT VALID PHRASES. THOUGH WHEN YOU ARE SPEAKING, IT SOUNDS LIKE "COULD OF", THE CORRECT TERMS ARE "COULD'VE", "WOULD'VE", AND "SHOULD'VE". STOP DOING IT OR I WILL HIT YOU.

Now, please stop making that mistake. Quite a few of you are guilty of it and I want it to stop.

That's all for this lesson.

Date: 6/13/2010 5:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    Yikes, I'm almost afraid to wright anything now! *dodges fist* Seriously, why do I see (in novels for example) a comma before too and sometimes no comma?
Date: 6/13/2010 5:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63846    Kelly... "write..."

It's not a RULE to have a comma before "too". It just helps.

Date: 6/13/2010 6:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 16916    I am very careful with my grammar, I do find this post insulting. Do you honestly think people are going to stop and find your post everytime they want to make sure they are being grammatically correct? Some people aren't as gifted as you are in this area and it is downright demeaning to post something like this.
Date: 6/13/2010 6:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    Jellie, I think she was being humorous and informative at the same time. Some people have a dry sense of humor.
Date: 6/13/2010 6:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 16916    If it was meant to be humerous, then I apologize.
Date: 6/13/2010 6:35:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63846    Jellie, Kelly is mostly right. I was attempting to be informative, but I didn't mean to be offensive or humorous. I don't understand why you would think that it was directed at you specifically. I don't think people are going to try and find my post every time, but I do expect them to at least think back to it if they think they're making an error. And tell me: do you find textbooks in school "demeaning" for making an attempt at being informative? I hope not. I wasn't directing it at the people who have decent grammar; I was directing it at the people who needed help with grammar. I'm insulted that you would think I was trying to be condescending.
Date: 6/13/2010 6:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 16916    "When I see this happening, I want to scream. DON'T DO I"

"COULD OF, WOULD OF, AND SHOULD OF ARE NOT VALID PHRASES. THOUGH WHEN YOU ARE SPEAKING, IT SOUNDS LIKE "COULD OF", THE CORRECT TERMS ARE "COULD'VE", "WOULD'VE", AND "SHOULD'VE". STOP DOING IT OR I WILL HIT YOU."

Typing in all caps..saying "Stop it or I will hit you." Plus this isn't the only post you have made about grammar and people making grammatical errors. You have made it abundantly clear that people who use poor grammar irritate you.

If you meant this to be informative then I want you to take a look back at it and look at how an outsider might feel. Put yourself in someone's shoes that might not be so confident in the way they write. I see your intention, but your wording is insulting.

I never thought you were directing anything at me specifically. Please trust that I am not that self-centered..LOL .

Text books don't threaten to scream or hit people if they do something grammatically incorrect.

Why do you expect people to think back before making an error? Some people weren't blessed with a education or gift for understanding words.

What subject did you not do so well in? I didn't do well at all in math. It doesn't matter how many times someone explains a quadratic equation to me, chances are unless they have magical powers..I will not understand it. Please understand that some people are this way with writing.

Date: 6/13/2010 6:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 16916    an* education...
Date: 6/13/2010 7:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    I guess I'm a little surprised since I took your post as being informative with a humorous twist. My response was meant to be humorous (wright instead of right). I guess you took that seriously! I don't get easily offended, but maybe next time just do your post without the added invective if you want to teach us something. I'm certainly one that can use these lessons.
Date: 6/13/2010 7:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    I meant write, I forgot what I wrote.
Date: 6/13/2010 7:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 63041    This is a very informative post Krista. The homophones you cited are the most commonly 'confusing' ones and I believe many people will benefit from the clear concise way you explained them, with examples. I found humor in your post because I personally find these same errors irritating when I see them. I do not however believe this post or your want to inform was insulting or belittling... but, the 'tone' of the post may read a bit harsh instead of 'helpful'. No matter, this is good stuff that all of us can either learn from if we never knew the differences, or be reminded when we get a bit confused. Thanks.
Date: 6/13/2010 7:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 4144    i think most of us are guilty of all of the above. but i don't see why it really matters. i can't speak for others but i am usually online during lunch at work or pop in here late at night. ok....10pm is late for me .....and i just don't pay that much attention to it. i don't think it's a big deal. we can usually figure out what someone means even if they use the wrong word.
this is supposed to be a fun website. i'm sure there are sites that are more strict about grammer. maybe those of us that don't analyze every single word are just here for the fun of it.
not trying to be mean but i don't think we need grammer cops here.

Date: 6/13/2010 7:36:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63846    Jellie, I'm sorry. The only message I was trying to communicate was that I wasn't trying to be offensive. People who use improper grammar do irritate me and I was trying to help them, but I was trying to get a point across that grammar's important to me and it should be important to other people, too.

And Kelly, I'm pretty literal about grammar. I have a tendency to twist things a little humorously but it wasn't intended to be entirely humorous, though the "or I will hit you" part was intended to be funny.

Date: 6/13/2010 8:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    "I will hit you" is exactly what I took as being humorous No big deal though, who knew Grammar could be violent and controversial? LOL
Date: 6/13/2010 8:05:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63846    The world of grammar is darker than you think, Kelly.
Date: 6/14/2010 9:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    Good post!
Date: 6/14/2010 10:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    I don't know why anyone busts their britches over other people's misspellings. I will tell people that repeated misspellings in a document will make them look uneducated and will cause other people to take them less seriously, but they're the ones who suffer for it, not me.
