Sure there is. Try volunteering to change some elderly stranger's diapers in a nursing home some evening or weekend. |
Date: 12/18/2009 9:51:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 2508 even though its a grose job wouldnt that make you feel good to know that they are clean and happy? i would still feel good about doing that kinda favor for them... |
Date: 12/18/2009 9:54:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 2508 plus the other helpers there whould be happy you did it and they didnt have to! and probably thank you..and you whould say you're welcome...or no problem..making you feel good because they are so greatful for your help...not a selfless good deed in my opinion |

Date: 12/18/2009 10:29:00 PM From Authorid: 54444 couldn't agree with you less sunshine. Folks who do jobs on this order are not thinking of self gratification...it is called compassion and the world is filled with compassionate people...people who are empathic to the feelings of others. How shameful to suggest their motives are selfish. |
Date: 12/18/2009 11:05:00 PM From Authorid: 54444 People do not always do things because it makes them feel good...they often however do things because they understand that it needs to be done and their feeling is generally , "if not I, then who?" Thank god there people like this. |
Date: 12/18/2009 11:57:00 PM From Authorid: 45630 I think the distinction has to be made that if you do a good deed so that you will feel good then it is not selfless. If feeling good is a byproduct of ou doing something and you didn't care if you felt good afterwards then that is selfless. A bloke who rescues someone from a fire is not doing it to make themselves feel better. They are doing it as Man of Asgard said, "because it has to be done". If they feel good afterwards that does not make the deed anyless selfless. Selfless by definition is doing something and not expecting a reward. If you get one at the end it does not make this act any less selfless. |

I have to agree with MOA on this one. |
Date: 12/19/2009 5:25:00 AM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 2508 i guess i should use a better word than "selfless" maybe what i should say is ..is there such a thing as doing a good deed and not feeling so good about doing it? |
Date: 12/19/2009 5:34:00 AM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 2508 MOA i mean no disrespect..i guess i should of worded it better. im not meaning to call those people sefish by no means..i just mean my helping those people you would feel good about doing so..i feel goos every time i work at my mothers daycare to help out for the day...playing with kids and changing diapers right doen to the durty jobs ...it all makes me feel good at the end of the day to know i helped out so much in doing my mom these favors...but is there such a thing in doing these typs of things and not feeling good about doing them? im really not so sure...Phebe on friends tried to proove Joey wrong by getting stung by a bee..the deed being "he would look good infront of the other bees" joey then said the bee probably died after stinging her...in turn made her feel aweful! So then she donated money to PBS (a network she hates and money she didnt want to give away) but her donation landed joey on TV...made her feel awesome...see where im going with this? |
Date: 12/19/2009 6:27:00 AM From Authorid: 15157 A selfless act is when one does this deed for the betterment of mankind no matter how big or small. |

Date: 12/19/2009 7:11:00 AM From Authorid: 54444 sorry if I misunderstood, Sunshine. Perhaps I could say it is possible to think you are doing something good, and have it actually not be the right thing to do . You could feel really bad if that happened. I know and have done it myself. |

There are people out there who do a lot of good deeds to help others, and if they feel good afterwards, that's an added bonus. But, sadly, there are people out there who do things, only to be recognised as one who does good things. They do them, and expect something in return. A favour here and there, the "Well I did this for you, you should do this for me." I know a couple of these people, they whinge and complain all the time that others haven't done for them as they have. It's sad to watch. I'm sure we all know at least one person like this. ON the the upside though, I do know lots of lovely, kind hearted people who would give you the shirt off their back if they thought it would help. I love these people, they are so loving and not judgemental. |
Date: 12/19/2009 4:01:00 PM From Authorid: 55967 I would almost think it would come down to your mood at the time of doing it, no matter what it is. You might do a good deed that you felt compelled to do for someone, and be in a cranky mood when you do it. But later on, you might still get that good feeling. Another thing would be if you did a good deed and didn't realize it was that good when you did it. Other than that, I think that if you have any empathy at all, you by necessity must feel some good, even if it is feeling good for that other person since you just made their life a bit better. That's all I got. Good question, though. |
