As well intentioned as these chain emails circulating around may (or may not) be, everyone should check this article out: http://www.factcheck.org/2009/10/inoculation-misinformation/ The main thing it states about Thimerosal: "FDA regulations prevent adding thimerosal to primarily pediatric vaccines. The H1N1 vaccine is not specifically formulated for children, and the multidose version – but not the single-dose version – does contain thimerosal. However, the CDC stresses that even flu vaccines with thimerosal should pose no danger to children." I'm not getting this vaccine for neither myself nor my children because of simply a gut feeling telling me not to. That may be foolish to some people, but something is telling me we just don't need it and we shouldn't get it. However, I would hate for someone who actually needs and could benefit from this vaccine not get it because of a chain email. I guess I'm not really for or against vaccines, and I have absolutely no scientific backing to say they may or may not contribute to autism. My children have received all the "required" vaccines and they are perfectly happy and healthy. The same can be said for my husband and I who received all the vaccines as children and young adults. I am absolutely not saying that vaccines don't contribute to autism, but in my case they haven't, and that's all I know and can say about the issue. |

we will take it of course I don' feel any threat by it myself. But the doctors here do say anyone who t tke it.thinks they had any problems with shots in the past or are allergic to eggs should not take it. That doesn't apply to us Fiery Mom, but you should be careful I think due to your history. |

On a mom's list I've been on for 13 years (we all were due in May 97 and most of us managed to make it to may although some were close or in June!), the pro-vax and anti-vax debate/controversy has been a long-running one. We love each other like family, and had a huge blowout GTG back in 06 in Canada, celebrating 10 years of the list, but get on a topic like vaccines and it's war. We have, to our credit, managed to mellow over the years and realize where everyone stands on the subject, and we respect each other's opinions and choices. I won't defend my anti-vax stance other than to say it's my choice. I'm on the other side, I have a child who has never had a vaccination and is perfectly healthy and happy, and rarely gets sick. I believe in naturally-acquired immunity. Now certainly if polio were to become an epidemic again, I might consider the vaccine for it, because of the absolute certain crippling effects. However, I had measles AND mumps when I was a baby, before I was even old enough to have the vaccines for them back then, and I survived them just fine. Chickenpox too. I find it kind of amusing that my children's school is going all ape over the Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine), and I have a waiver from the state exempting both kids from vaxes, yet neither one of my children have ever picked up the virus. There's not been an outbreak in nearly a decade or so, and part of that, to its credit, is probably because more kids get vaccinated for it than used to. It just helps those of us who choose not to vax. And you're right, MOA, we don't have that issue, but I did read somewhere, and darned if I can find it now, that there was another allergy as well if you had, you weren't supposed to get the vaccine, which cut me out. I *think* it said, don't quote me tho, if you have a reaction to aspirin. And I'm deathly allergic to aspirin. There were actually quite a few allergic reactions the article mentioned if you had, not to get the vax. and the info I posted from the CDC is what *I* copied and pasted, not what came in the email. The email was only the short snippet of what I posted, I'm not sure where she read her info. After reading the email, I went directly to the cdc website and found that link I posted above. No thimerosal, no mercury, period. I'll eat crow when my kids have a bad case of chickenpox, which in turn will give me the shingles since I HAVE had chickenpox, and I'll be miserable for a week. And you know it's gonna happen...maybe... |
Date: 10/23/2009 9:28:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63201 And Nicole, I agree with you, even if I DID vax, I still wouldn't get this particular one, simply because a gut feeling is shouting at me not to. I don't buy the CDC line that thimerosal poses no threat. If it posed no threat, then why did Congress slip in an 11th hour amendment to the Homeland Security Act that protects pharmaceuticals manufacturing thimerosal-containing vaccines (Lilly was the main one mentioned) from lawsuits of children suspected as being endangered (i.e. autism diagnosis) from the vaccines? If there was no threat, why slip that amendment in there that had nothing to do with the Homeland Security Act? |
Date: 10/24/2009 1:44:00 AM From Authorid: 51876 Why is the Man of Asgard's article links deleted? All I get is a blank screen? The threat of a lawsuit maybe? |
Date: 10/24/2009 3:20:00 AM From Authorid: 46527 I would not have it, nor would I want my kids to. |
Date: 10/24/2009 6:28:00 AM From Authorid: 48809 I feel the same way as LSR does about the vaccines. I have read too many articles to the contrary about this stuff and there is no way I would take it willingly. I heard from a woman that said her grandson was born just fine and he was just like any other child that talked and played until he was 2 years old. At that time, the Dr. vaccinated him for something or other and he became Autistic and could no longer speak! |
Date: 10/24/2009 7:31:00 AM From Authorid: 10722 I'd get the regular flu shot. But I'll never get vaccinated for something that was engineered. |

I don't know if 10 months can get the vaccine, but even before I knew this knew info, I wasn't doing to let her get the swine flu vaccine. Besides I nurse, and breastmilk is amazing stuff and naturally produces antibodies. I am sorry to hear about your child having Autism, this is something that worries me constantly about vaccines.. |
Date: 10/24/2009 8:30:00 AM From Authorid: 7830 None of us have gotten it, nor will we get it. We dont do flu vaccines around here and we've always been just fine. |
Date: 10/24/2009 8:47:00 AM From Authorid: 22852 @}~~ No shots for us either. My Dr. told me no when I asked if I should get it {even though I wasn't planning to I still asked} |
Date: 10/24/2009 10:02:00 AM From Authorid: 46486 Yeah I only got a regular flu shot and I've been fine. |
Date: 10/24/2009 1:34:00 PM From Authorid: 36901 My son and I both got a regular flu shot (he's 7.5 mo). We won't be getting the H1N1. I'm really not sure what to think at this point, but I'm not taking any chances. |
Date: 10/24/2009 3:46:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63201 The general consensus seems to be that this is a "bad thing." No one has studied long-term effects of the vaccine, what your real protection chances are, or if this virus mutates frequently, as most flu strains do. Thanks for all your responses, I'm not sure what happened to MOA's links if he had any in the comment he left, I don't have the ability (nor would I if I did) to edit comments. |
Date: 10/24/2009 4:59:00 PM From Authorid: 54444 I don't recall having posted any links here.??? |
Date: 10/24/2009 5:24:00 PM From Authorid: 3835 I am an opt out human. I will not get those flu shots, and I am very opinionated about my reasons why, but distrust of government intentions, has a lot to do with it |
Date: 10/25/2009 10:36:00 AM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63201 Sorry MOA, there was just a huge gap in your comment, and your taggie, so it looked like something was there and then disappeared...just an odd fluke I guess... |
Date: 10/25/2009 4:02:00 PM From Authorid: 7574 I got my H1N1 vaccine (the nasal type) on Friday, since I'm a dental hygiene student and we see so many patients. I was hesitant to get it, but so far I have no complaints. |
Date: 10/25/2009 6:00:00 PM From Authorid: 15228 I'm sorry, but it has been proven that thimerosal is safe. I know there is absolutely nothing I can say or do to prove to you that it is not dangerous, there are no links I could provide, no medical evidence I can show that will convince you otherwise. Thimerosal is not in the h1n1 vapor vaccine by the way. It is not in the 1 shot vaccine, however it is in the two shot h1n1 vaccine. |
Date: 10/27/2009 3:14:00 AM From Authorid: 42945 Hubby and I had our shots 2 weeks ago...Over the years I've read all kinds of information about all vaccinations..the only thing my doctor said is if you are allergic to eggs you cannot have it...Hubby and I are okay and has no reaction to it.. |
Date: 10/27/2009 10:30:00 AM From Authorid: 15228 On the local radio news at the top of every hour today they keep saying that the one shot vaccine is available at our health department for pregnant woman only. They are stressing that the shot doesn't contain thimerosal. |

No, Kelly, I'm afraid you can't convince me Thimerosal is safe. I've read medical studies, usually funded privately by pharmaceutical companies, that point to it's safety. My question is, if it's safe, then why did the FDA pull it out of the MMR vaccine after autism cases started popping up like wildfire? I'd rather be safe than sorry. I will carry the burden of having my son vaccinated and being vaccinated while pregnant for the rest of my life. I feel like I caused my son's autism by allowing the vaccines. Thankfully I didn't make the mistake with the second son. The only version they're offering around here is the version with the Thimerosal added in. And prisoners are getting it before anyone else, even healthcare workers. It's just sad.... |

Many people are concerned about a possible link between thimerosal and autism, but studies cited by the American Center for Disease Control (CDC) find no evidence for this connection. Read more: http://vaccinations.suite101.com/article.cfm/h1n1_flu_injection#ixzz0XS2s4lU2 |
