So this lady was working for Wal-mart? I suppose it must have looked odd you digging in your sisterinlaw's bag, and I also suppose that if she does work for Wal-mart that she has seen similar instances done time and time again where people are stuffing goods that they have no intention of paying for into a partners bag. It's not a nice thing for you to have happened hun but I suppose she was just doing her job...I don't know if complaining about it to the heads of the store if it will do you any good...but try you never know... BTW it's good to see you sweetie, seems like ages since I've seen you...*hugs* |
Date: 8/22/2009 2:18:00 AM From Authorid: 64514 Wal-Mart has been really bad lately, I won't even go there to shop. A while back, during the X-mas rush or what ever it was, a worker was trampled to death and a pregnant women hurt because of stupid people and not enough workers. Plus, Wal-Mart tried the same kind of thing with my friends when I was 13, they accused them of trying to shop lift but found nothing on them and still told them not to come back, I was there but they didn't accuse me of anything. Try complaining to Corprate. G'Luck. |
Date: 8/22/2009 3:33:00 AM From Authorid: 51876 Walmart only promotes total brownnosers, this woman was trying to elevate her status. Walmart is the Number One place for shoplifting and they are starting to address the issue. Sorry to hear but __it happens. |

*hugs* Zema! Good to see you too Zema! As I do agree its her job and it might have looked funny and all but if she was watching properly, she would have seen I pulled out a wallet. Yeah I believe I will not be shopping there for a while because this whole thing shouldn't have happened. A pregnant woman getting hurt, thats a shame. Or anyone for that matter! I do see they're starting address the issue but dang that was totally crazy. Thank you all for your comments! |

technically they can't stop you until you are past all points of purchase, however some states do have concealment laws and hopefully when he looked in the purse it was a non invasive search, which means he can look but cannot rummage around inside of it.. Personally I would have told him to call the police and have them present during the search, and if nothing were found immediatley filed a police report |
Date: 8/22/2009 5:27:00 AM From Authorid: 16916 When people steal it raises prices for the honest part of society that don't steal. The worker was just doing her job, IMO. It sucks that she singled you out but at the same time if someone were stealing I would want her to say something because prices then go up for everyone else. |
Date: 8/22/2009 7:21:00 AM From Authorid: 4995 OMGOODNESS! That's just awful! I remember working for Payless shoes and every time a person of a certain ethnicticity came in I was ORDERED by my manager to follow the customer around and pretend to be straightening shoes. One lady actually turned to be and said bluntly "They sure want you to keep and eye on me,don't they?" I remember being soooo ashamed and apologizing profusely. Some places are so anal about that. I bet that lady about fainted when she saw she was wrong. |
Date: 8/22/2009 7:50:00 AM From Authorid: 62679 She may have seen you "stuff something" into your sis in law's purse, but unless she was sure it was merchandise, she has no reason to do that. I hope she felt like a fool afterwards and was embarassed. |
Date: 8/22/2009 8:05:00 AM From Authorid: 51635 This is very unusual, it is Wal-Mart's policy to wait until you try to leave the store before they stop you. They usually have a plain closed person follow you all the way to door and try not to be noticed while they do it. IF you really want to complain to the higher ups, go to walmart.com or call 800-walmart, just be sure you have the store #, it should be on your receipt ... |
Date: 8/22/2009 8:32:00 AM From Authorid: 22852 @}~~ By law they cannot stop you for shoplifting until you walk out the door.. THAT IS THE LAW no ands ifs or buts. Yes, I would complain to the main headquarters. |

These stories make me soo mad!! It use to be the same over here but since but they brought out a law that saids if they stop u and accuse u of stealin and there 100% sure u did and they search u and find nothing u can sue the shop for ''embrassment', since then there are very carefull with the there secruity and measures so they can concentrate on the real robbers!! ~Irish Lass~ |
Date: 8/22/2009 10:43:00 AM From Authorid: 61966 I didn't even think they are allowed to say anything, even if they see you. Who knows. I'm sorry that happened to you! I bet the lady who accused you felt worse! |
Date: 8/22/2009 11:27:00 AM From Authorid: 30747 Years ago I was what was called a "floor walker" for a large department store simular to WalMart. I was trained extensively to catch shopplifters (among other loss prevention issues). First of all, our employees were stictly instructed they were NOT to aproach anyone they "suspected" shop lifted or anything else. That was left to the people trained to do that and subsequently local law enforcement. An employee could tip off a floor walker but in no way could accuse a shopper of anything illegal. There are legalities involved in all this. As a floor walker I had to know exactly what they had and where it was on thier person and I could NOT approach them until they left the store and then I had to be very specific about what I saw and absolutely sure the merhcandise was STILL on them and where it was, otherwise it was false detainment and very illegal. For that reason we kept a certain amount of petty cash "just in case" a situation like yours arose. Not many people are aware of the illegalities of a situation such as you were in and unfortunately unless you file a complaint for false detainment with local law at the time of incodent...there isn't much you can do about it. If you had thrown a tantrum and threatened a law suit there in the store....you might have walked away with something for it. I'm not sure about WalMart policy but this was the policy of a simular store that was just as big about 15 years ago. You could still file a complaint with the corporation but without law enforcement taking statements at the time....odds are nothing would come of it. (except and overhaul of loss prevention procedures at your local WalMart.) |

I'd complain, I don't care if their "tired" or not.. we're all "tired" from work... anyways, I totally agree with Pyriel. I'd say complain to Walmart headquaters, but seriously.. think anything would be done? Probably not. |
Date: 8/22/2009 1:26:00 PM From Authorid: 7710 That's really obnoxious- sorry you had to go through that. I've noticed lately that the Walmart's I shop at are dropping in quality, and have rude employees. |
Date: 8/22/2009 8:44:00 PM From Authorid: 51292 I work at Wal Mart and this wouldnt go on in our store. A manager cant question someone and he certainly cannot search them or their belongings without knowing for 100% sure they have actually tried to steal something. He cant just take someones word for it. Meaning he has to see them put the item in their pocket/purse whatever..and he cannot take his eyes off them for the entire time they are in the store. Only when they attempt to leave the store can he really stop them and question them. I had a co-worker get fired for a making a "bad stop", our Wal Mart takes that very seriously and other stores have been sued for it. I would complain for sure and Im sorry you had such a lousy experience. |
Date: 8/23/2009 3:33:00 AM From Authorid: 41744 I have had something similar happen to me. It was at a kmart and it happened like 4 times all 4 times i was followed around the store by the same woman. The last time I made a comment about complaining loud enough for her to hear me and it stopped, |
Date: 8/23/2009 11:24:00 AM From Authorid: 64507 I work at my local Walmart and I would personally say complain to the store and home office. That's not right what the employee did. Good luck to you. |
