How to deal with nerves...

  Author:  52140  Category:(Discussion) Created:(5/27/2009 6:23:00 AM)
This post has been Viewed (1555 times)

I'm in the US Air Force and I fly. When I am in the classroom and workin on the communications console, I know what I'm doing and I can do it fine, but when I get on the jet, I get so nervous and second guess myself, even though what I was doing was RIGHT!

I put alot of pressure on myself just because I have two more flights until my final eval, so I think thats why I'm nervous. I'm not stressing about it as bad, even though I already flew my sixth ride two times and didn't pass it!! I'm learning to keep my nerves down, and just do the job, but I'm still so afraid that I'm going to freeze when I get on the jet.

When I talk to my friends about it, they say, "You'll do fine, you know your job." But I still don't believe it.

Another person told me that with my job, we have to be really cocky. A pilot can't say, "I think I'm going to land the plane." He has to say, "I'm going to land the plane." So I should therefore say, "I'm going to do my job." So maybe my attitude needs to be more cocky...

Any advice?

Nerves are a natural reaction to a stressful situation, probably the evals. I remember how nervous I was the first time that we got engaged in a fire fight in Iraq. I was nervous as all get out, I wondered if I was going to make the right decisions, was I going to get one of my Soldiers killed, or myself. In the end, I relied on the trainging that I had recieved, applied it, and surrendered myself to the fact that the outcome is going to be what it is, and that I made the decisions to the best of my ability, and that would have to be enough. Hope that helps...

Talk yourself through everything in your mind, the preflights, inflights, vectors, patterns, landing, and post flight. All this stuff before you even step up to the plane. It is amazing how much better the mind will react when it has prepared for what is ahead....
Date: 5/27/2009 8:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 13636    The only job cockier than pilots in the AF, is the ATC in the AF. That's just the way it needs to be. Live it, love it, be it.
Date: 5/27/2009 9:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 4144    as much as i can't stand a person with a cocky attitude i have to agree with your friend. just puff up and do it! just please....please ....please leave the cocky attitude on the plane!!
good luck!!
