My weight loss journey and a comment from my kids ~FieryMomOf2~

I used to weight 140 lbs. That was a good weight for me, having a large frame, thanks to Native American heritage. 2 kids later, and I was holding steady at 180. Then I met my now-ex boyfriend, who loved to eat. At 6'2" and 350+ lbs, he could pack away a lot of food, and liked to take us all out to eat quite frequently. Well I didn't notice the pounds slowly creeping up on me, but I noticed my clothes were getting tight so I started buying larger sizes, bit by bit.

I went to the doctor one day and weighed in at a shocking 243 pounds! I realized I was miserable, and my bad eating habits had gotten way out of control. I'm on cholesterol medicine now because of it. After the ex moved out, I began to look at my unhealthy eating habits and began to make a change. I live on a fixed income, so eating out wasn't an option for us much. When we do eat out, I make healthy choices and only indulge very rarely.

Over the course of 5 months, I have dropped down 43 pounds and just weighed myself today. 200 exactly! I know I still have 60 lbs to go, but one day at a time. And I'm really not exercising as much as I should be, I've just changed my eating habits. My doctor's concerned that I'm losing weight without really trying, but I told him not to worry, it's not coming off TOO fast.

Oh and my kids? Today I said something about being "fat" and my youngest said "Mom you're not fat, if you were too skinny there wouldn't be enough of you to hug!" and my oldest said "Mom I'm overweight too (he's really not), and being overweight just means that we're blessed enough to have good food to eat!" Which really changed my perspective on things.

I'll try to get some before and after pics up, but I want to drop just a bit more weight before I do that. I don't have too many "before" pics as I was really hiding from the camera during that time.

I'm just so happy that I'm almost under 200 lbs and wanted to share what my sweet boys said to me!

I was doing pretty good and I'd lost about 45 pounds, but I had to be more careful when I was pregnant. I gained 21 pounds. Now that he's here, I can start back on my "diet".

Date: 3/16/2009 1:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 61811    That's awesome! I've been gaining weight steadily for 5 years, and I really wish I could do what you do. I went from 160-180 which isn't that bad, but I wish I was 140ish. You're so lucky your main reason is food. SO LUCKY!! With me, I do everything right: lots of small meals, they're healthy and balanced, but I don't lose any weight. I need to exercise but that isn't happening. lol I'm really proud of you and if you ever need any support, just message me and I'll do my best to give some words of encouragement...I'm good at that, even if I can't encourage myself to get on that stationary bike, or walk at the park RIGHT next to my house. hehe. <3
Date: 3/16/2009 3:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    That is excellent Melissa and congratulations, you are doing very well hun, keep up the good work and you'll reach your goal in no time. We've gotta love what our kids say to us at times haven't we? they are so precious...

Date: 3/16/2009 10:01:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63201    Thank you all Sunflowerchica, I've cut a lot of starchy foods out of my diet. I still love my pasta, but I don't eat a whole plate full of it anymore. And I've cut out refined sugar, the only place I still have it is in my iced tea because I can't afford/can't stand the sugar alternatives such as Splenda. When I see that I've lost a good deal of weight, I'll allow myself one regular size Hershey Bar (eaten over several days) or a bowl of vanilla ice cream. I'm hoping I can find motivation to start going to the gym where I have been paying for 6-8 months and actually start using the services, then that will really take the weight off.

I walk a lot, but not on purpose! LOL I don't do treadmills easily or stairsteppers, but I walk all over the park during baseball season and during the summer. I walk back and forth to my mom's house instead of driving, I walk to the truck stop near my house, I walk everywhere I can!

I've noticed the biggest difference in my knees and hips. When I was at my highest, my knees hurt ALL the time (I had left knee surgery years ago), and my ankles would swell grossly due to fluid retention. Since dropping the weight, my ankles no longer swell and my knees don't hurt. I can actually sit Indian style in my computer chair again comfortably!

It's all about making small goals. I only let myself make goals of 10 lbs at a time rather than groaning and saying "Oh God, I have SIXTY more pounds to lose." My next goal is to get to 190, and I ignore "the big picture." It's MUCH easier this way and you find that you reach those small goals faster and feel rewarded and happier that much sooner. It really does work!

I tried Atkins and Zone and South Beach and was just miserable. I realized I don't need someone to tell me how to eat, I just need to learn for myself what healthy food choices to make and go for it! I eat lots of raw cauliflower and low-fat ranch dressing, and that keeps me full for hours! I also eat a lot of fruit, which is good for speeding up the metabolism.

I could just go on and on...heh thanks so much again for all the support and I promise to get those pics up soon! *hugs and love* Melissa
