Update on my skin question ~FieryMomOf2~

I went to the doctor Friday, full of questions. I didn't get to see my regular doctor, but another resident that was there and was just as good. He didn't seem to feel the need for any labwork or anything. He called it "melasma" and said that it could be either hormonal or a result of some of my medications being taken long-term. My mom had me scared when she looked it up in her book and found that it's sometimes related to lupus, but with lupus comes joint pain, and I had none.

So he referred me to a dermatologist, they're supposed to call me with the appointment. He doesn't think it's cancer or anything like that, I'm hoping it really is just hormonal and that's it. When I had my hysterectomy almost 7 years ago, the ob-gyn told me that over the years I would need a hormone therapy adjustment rather than just estrogen (which is all I'm on now). I'm 38, so I'm nearing the natural menopause stage. I remember with my second pregnancy, the "mustache" area of my face became dark (I forget what they call it now) and it went away after I had my baby. So I'm hoping that with some hormone adjustments this will go away too.

He also said it could be a fungal type infection, and I'll need to see the derm about that. So most likely he'll take a skin scraping (ouch) to be sure of what it is.

That's all I know for now! I should've known it wasn't my liver because all my training told me you get jaundiced (yellow) when the liver is involved, not dark. Doh. I just panicked and forgot all my medical training in an instant.

So now I sit and wait on the dermatologist to give me a call, and I hate waiting!

Jaundice is not the only condition of liver failure in discoloration.A ex-wife of a boss I had years ago had toxic shock from tylenols and her skin darkened, not just yellow but she was a alcoholic too.

Wish you good health.
