Skin turning dark a sign of...? ~FieryMomOf2~

Ok so after the FOURTH person asked me about my skin, I thought I would come to the all-wise at USM and ask. My family doctor was the first to notice. He asked me "Have you been out in the sun a lot?" Um, not really, why? He blew me off and said it was probably nothing. So I mentioned it to my mom, and she noticed it under the flourescent lights while I was in the hospital (I was just released yesterday, massive asthma attack, they thought it was my heart..). Then another friend noticed it, and then yesterday a girl I know at the truck stop who always gives me free sweet tea when I come in, noticed it. She said it looks darker on my left than my right side.

I'm slowly but surely freaking out here. What on earth could be causing it? I don't see it, but the lights in my bathroom are kinda poor and not the best for checking out changes in your skin tone. I'm on antiretroviral medicine, cholesterol medicine, anxiety meds, and a diuretic. I've been on these meds for a long time, why is my skin changing now? I just started the cholesterol med a month ago, but I really doubt that's making my skin change color.

Help? I'm kinda scared....

I'm not saying that is what it is but a definite possibility.Way too many different chemicals.
hope you find the source.Good Luck and Good Health.

Date: 2/19/2009 6:25:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63201    Thanks Bruiex. I wonder if it's affecting my liver, taking that many medications. I know the antiretrovirals do affect the liver over time, but I really have no other alternative if I want to live. It just worries me with so many people noticing my skin getting darker.
Date: 2/19/2009 7:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 15157    Hello Firekit it could be a side effect of a combination of medications. The doctor should have been trying to figure it out.
Date: 2/19/2009 7:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 51876    That sounds plausible about the liver because discolorization of the skin has always been linked to that.
Date: 2/19/2009 7:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 58078    I would just call your doctor again and express your concern.
Date: 2/19/2009 7:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 15394    could be hormones. could be the liver. some of the cholesterol meds have to be followed with blood work for iver enzymes... look up the cholesterol med and see what the side effects are and if u should have blood work... if still concerned I would ask the doc to look into it with u.
Date: 2/19/2009 8:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 46486    That's sad that your doctor just shrugged you off the way he did. Anyways, I think the others are right about the combination of medications and chemicals may have effect. However, I'm no doctor I'd call your doctor and express your concern to him and let him know that this is freaking you out and you want to know WHAT is going on. Good luck, keep us posted.
Date: 2/19/2009 4:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 37150    I would just visit the doctor again. It could very well be a side effect of all the meds in your liver. Good luck
Date: 2/19/2009 4:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63201    I have a doctor's appointment for tomorrow to run blood work on me to find out what's going on. So hopefully I will have some answers tomorrow. Thanks everyone /hugs
Date: 2/20/2009 2:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 62679    I think the skin turns YELLOW if your liver is shutting down, so it's probably not that...

I would get it checked out asap though.
