What is the best kind of birds to get someone?

My adopted parents have been really great to me. I swear that without them I wouldn't have gotten to this point in my life. They have loved me so much that I want to do something special for them. They say that I do enough for them around the house, but I want to do something exraspecial, like get them some birds. I've heard that the songs of birds can help elevate moods, etc.

They've had love birds or finches at some point, can't remember what kind, and they loved them.

What are some good birds that aren't too messy or expensive, and have cheery songs?

Date: 4/4/2008 6:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 16845    My advice is really don't do it without talking to them first. Or maybe one of them and make it a 'surprise' for the other. I just say this because we went through a situation where one of my husbands siblings got a pet for the family.....and they didn't ask about it first...needless to say the pet ultimately ended up being given up. That being said, I've always heard canaries have a pretty song
Date: 4/4/2008 7:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 42703    Not really a bird fan. We had a canarie, and when we went to give it away, it escaped the cage, and started to dive bomb me! Anyways- good luck and I agree with Becky don't do anything without asking them first.

Date: 4/4/2008 9:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 53284    I don't think that you should get someone else living creatures. If you're really interested in this, then you should talk to them before you purchase this gift to make sure that they would welcome birds into their home.
Date: 4/4/2008 12:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 4144    ask first! there comes a time in most people's lives when they don't want any more critters! it hit me at about 30 years old!
Date: 4/4/2008 7:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    It's a lovely thought for you to want to get them something extra special but you do need to feel them out first about getting a pet....love birds (budgerigars) are lovely, and if they are young enough they can learn to talk...
Date: 4/4/2008 7:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 64365    Well, all birds are messy...but if you want one with cheery songs...that's a Canary. Finches sound like little computers. I had parakeets that made beautiful noises...but then they could also make some pretty raucous noises...
Date: 4/4/2008 8:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 64614    Well, I know parakeets are good...Maybe a canary or two....Well, I've never had a canary...I've only had parakeets, but I love to hear them sing! So, parakeets might be good...It's up to you, though...*Smiles* -Lightning13-
Date: 4/4/2008 10:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 40979    I had a parakeet and it would always break out of it's cage. The cat decided to show him who was boss one day, and ate him I say a Canary lol.
Date: 4/4/2008 10:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 40979    And I agree, ask them first :-)
Date: 4/4/2008 10:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 27403    Have you ever seen the canarys with the beatle haircut. TOooooo Precious! Love and Light
