Computer Help! Hard Drive Cabunk!

  Author:  26733  Category:(Discussion) Created:(11/8/2007 7:59:00 AM)

I wanted to read the information off an old hard drive off my old computer so I put the old hard in this newer computer but I connected it with the same ribbons and plugs as the old hard drive, while the current hard drive was still installed. So I turned the computer on and POOF...it didn't turn on and continues to not turn on. Someone help me!

Power supply and outlet are A - o - K

Date: 11/8/2007 8:35:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 26733    I got my answer, for those that read this in th future. My problem was that when you take of the plugs behind the hard you have to make sure you put them back exactly. Something about primary and secondary slave plug & ribbons.
Date: 11/8/2007 8:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 37101    Most computers can be fitted with two hard drives, as long as they're designated properly as primary and slave drives. Failure to create those designations, and you encounter goofy problems such as yours. -
Date: 11/8/2007 9:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 64487    Hey boom-boom I was typing up a reply in word, but see you've fixed your problem.

On computers I build, I generally prefer to put any IDE devices I have on cable select instead of specifically designating each one as master or slave. SATA 1/2 doesn't even use m/s/cs pins at all. I had an Asus motherboard that wouldn't detect things correctly until I put the IDE drives on cable select, but something in the default factory BIOS might have been boogered up from the get-go. I just keep using the CS setting out of habit.

Also, always make sure your power supply unit is enough to power your current hardware setup, or the computer may not power up similar to this.
