it tried talking to my dad

when we first moved into our new house back in 1996, it was very hard for all of us. our parents credit was not so good so we had to take whatever we could find at the time. i was the oldest of my four other brother and sisters. although we were poor we had the greatest time together, infact thinking back about it now, i know our poverty made us all the more closer.

the house we moved into was actualy large for our budget. it was two floors, a basement, and a big garage. the thing i need to tell here is about the attic.

first, the attic had its' own set of stairs that turned in sort of a half, or semi-circle. the stairs were weak, and if you shook them they would give a sort of wave. although the steps themselves were very glossy looking, as if freshly painted. there was always a smell of smoke or something burning near there. none of us ever dared to walk those steps until my youngest sister disapeared.

we were all having dinner about a month after living there when we noticed shayla was gone. we looked everywhere. mom was very nervious but dad thought it was a joke, we all thought she was playing around. but soon we started looking for her.

we had almost givin up until we heard the attic stairs start to rattle and then shake violently. right then me and my dad knew where she was. as we made our way to those old steps we decided to scare her back. dad hesitated turning on the hallway light, then he flickerd it hinself. now here it is... not only was shayla not there, it seemed the staircase to the attic had been fixed!

a myst of smoke that started white and then turned from grey to black came from under the attic door! a horrible smell came rushing out. it reminded me of the smell of cigar smoke and smoldering cardboard with a mix of dryed skin. we all hurried as fast as we could out of the house, we thought there was a fire.

when we got outside we noticed shayla huddled next to the garage. thank god she was alright!

but where was dad?

i ran back in gripping my lip. i yelled for dad as loud as i could. i faintly heard him on the second story floor. i ran as fast as i could and when i turned the corner i saw it!

there was dad pointing to a half lit human shape on the stairwell, i could barley see its' face. but what i did see is that it was pointing back at dad as its mouth was moving. no words came out, and if that wasn't enough it levitated a few feet higher. i grabbed dads arm and we ran out as fast as we could!

when we got outside we looked up at the attic window, there was a translucent man in an overcoat standing there, smoking a cigar...

How it changed my life:

not. just a heartpounding scary story to get the blood going.
