A question for people in the web design business

A question for people in the web design business:

When looking to hire someone new, do you want to see a portfolio that follows the trends and has things like a blog/interactive features, perhaps a lot of Flash and roll-overs and is "Web 2.0"-ish? Or would you rather see a book which focuses on clean, simple, readable/legible design?

I'm looking to get back into the field and want to re-design my portfolio to target better what design companies/hiring managers are looking for, but at the same time I don't want to seem like I'm copying everyone else, or "selling out."

Thanks,

Jen

Date: 6/13/2006 7:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 32763    Flash is not a bad thing, Ben. It's when overdone that it takes on a cheenchy look. Flash can grab a quick eye. I think the key is focusing on the kind of clients you have after and design to that. My personal opinion on a portfolio would be to design a little of both. It will show your overall skills.
Date: 6/13/2006 8:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 63194    BB, I didnt mean flash as in FLASH, lol. I meant the flashy flashy too much going on junk, lol. I didnt realize how I put it. I agree, flash can be great. I was talking about the sites where you go and its all you can do not to have a seizure.
Date: 6/13/2006 8:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 32763    I know what "flash" you meant and that's what I was talking about. Goober.
Date: 6/13/2006 8:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 63194    ... I may be a goober....
Date: 6/13/2006 8:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 63194    Grrrrr.... Oh how I strongly dislike biting my tongue, lol.
Date: 6/13/2006 8:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 32763    You don't have to bite your tongue everywhere...
Date: 6/13/2006 8:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 63194    OH how true. If I were to go... "somewhere" and tell you what I think of you... it would all be in good fun. But, on this post... i laughed... but next time... if there is no laugh involved... Oh watch out! hehehehehehehehehe FluffyMcFluffatron,.
Date: 6/13/2006 8:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 32763    Bring it on, big boy. I ain't scared.
Date: 6/14/2006 7:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    I'd say the field is definitely veering towards standards and the latter option. Large companies are starting to catch on to the fact that it is more profitable in the long run.
Date: 6/14/2006 7:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    The problem with flash is it's completely non-accessible. Flash should definitely be used sparingly and, if you're gonna use it, you need to think about a text alternative in case someone is using a screen reader.
Date: 6/15/2006 3:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 33256    OK thanks everyone!
