Celebrities help their causes or do more harm than good?

Celebrity influence obviously help charities. People will donate money to charities if a certain celebrity endorses it because it catches their attention.

My question is,when the topic is contraversial, do celebrities help or harm the cause? Thanks to endorsements by Snoop Dogg,Jamie Foxx,Susan Sarandon,Sean Penn, etc more people heard about Tookie Williams. Did that help or hurt his cause though?

I have noticed alot of times when celebrities speak out they turn people against their cause. Nick Clooney ran for Congress last year. He was a favored canidate. His son George flew other celebrities into the northern Kentucky district to help campaign for him. He lost by a landslide.

Alot of people admitted they were turned off by Hollywood telling them how to vote. Celebrities are invited as guest experts on shows to discuss everything from fashion to politics to economics.

If you were running for office or the center of a contraversial case would you want Sean Penns endorsement? Everyone knows my opinion if you have read any of my posts. Whats yours? I would personally want them(even if theyre well meaning) to root for the other side.

But you got the ST. Jude Tv and Radio Funds, And alot of Tv Stars, Singers put alot of effort and draws alot of attention to that cause, and they have raised alot of money for it.

I've seen stars who I thought spoke well on their favorite causes and would have in my opinion helped the cause but I've also seen stars talk about things that they obiviously know nothing. In cases like those, I think they hurt the cause. It personally offends me when I see a star addressing congress. Your celeberty status should not determine if you are qualified to address congress. A star in my opinion is just another voter.

Date: 12/13/2005 8:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 63194    I like susan serandon (sp) and her intentions, however, she goes about it all wrong and makes herself look like an idiot.Same goes for michael moore, he has GREAT ideas- he lets us know the facts, unfortuantly he makes himself look like a crybaby and then he looses credibility.
Date: 12/13/2005 8:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 63026    I seen musicians, and even elmo adress congress for great causes like keeping music in schools. And Baseball stars adressing congress for the steroid abuses and scandals.

Date: 12/13/2005 9:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 10391    I really do hate when it seems like just because a celebrity endorses something we should drop what we are doing and listen to every word and run out and do whatever they want. Endorsing something that raises money for a charitable cause is great and wonderful. But telling me who to vote for or talk about this or that concerning politics, it normally turns me off fast to them.
Date: 12/13/2005 10:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 4144    i could care less. i will donate to who i want to and nobody can influence me. not even a little.(let's keep george strait out of this!!!) seriously, i donate to st. jude a lot. also to the shriners. i don't have any personal experience with st. jude but if it wasn't for the shriners my neice wouldn't be alive today. as far as tookie williams goes i don't see the big deal. he killed people right? the only thing i see that they did wrong was waiting this long to kill him.
Date: 12/13/2005 11:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 63026    George Strait=Chevy...Toby Keith=Ford. Lol
Date: 12/13/2005 11:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 14464    Celebs are real people and I think if they believe in a cause then they should back it up all they want. I agree with Momma Bear on the Tookie Williams subject! Just because he did good after he killed people doesn't mean he never killed anyone. I think if you do something wrong you should be punished.
Date: 12/13/2005 12:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 12806    I agree with you. Celebrities (actors) make their living by "make believe". Their job is to make the public believe something that is not real. This is done for entertainment value. They are called movies. Some of these celbs actually went to college. But, they didn't major in politics, or economics...... However, now that they are RICH and famous and can live a life of bliss, a total fantasy life, they think they can make the whole world like that (thier life). Well, they can't, because their life is a fantasy, and our lives are lived in the real world where we go on vacation and pay 90 dollars a night for a hotel room, not 35,000 dollars a night. The majority of us in the REAL world don't even make that much in a year....... OK, I'm done.....lol.........
