Pearl Harbor Day 2004

The day after the devastating Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt addressed the Congress with his eloquent speech requesting a declaration of war. The clarity of his words remains bracing, even 63 years after the horrible day:

Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with the government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleagues delivered to the Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. Very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.

This morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As commander in chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.

Always will we remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces - with the unbounding determination of our people - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, Dec. 7, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.

The events of December 7 echo down the corridors of history. Among those the comments on the significance of the attack, none surpasses Churchill's immediate assessment:

"To have the United States at our side was to me the greatest joy. Now at this very moment I knew the United States was in the war, up to the neck and in to the death. So we had won after all!...Hitler's fate was sealed. Mussolini's fate was sealed. As for the Japanese, they would be ground to powder."

Let us invoke Shakespeare's words as our prayer for this day: "What's past is prologue..."

Date: 12/7/2004 12:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 48809    I remember when this happened and the terror I felt at the sneak attack of the Japanese on Dec.7, 1941 and the Presidents Declaration of war on Japan . As a child, I thought if the Japanese could go to Hawaii... then they could get to where I lived too. The terrible bombing of Hawaii was so frightening to those parents who had sons, husbands, brothers and fathers who were already stationed there when the killing began. One of the worst things I remember from this cowardly attack was about 5 brothers who were on the same ship and were all killed at the same time! I believe their names were Sullivan. When this happened, a new law went into effect that banned more than one person in a family from being together anywhere. I remember when the atom bomb was dropped on Japan by the Enola gay . I also remember when the war ended and the day the Japanese surrendered to General Douglas McArthur at sea. For those of you who are too young to remember this , count yourselves very lucky indeed, it was a very hard time for us all and even more so for the men and women who served our country!
Date: 12/7/2004 12:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    I grew up hearing my dad speak of this horrific event, he was a WW II vetran, so this is a day I know I'll never forget...
Date: 12/7/2004 4:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 43807    My Grandparents said it was a scary time in history. But also exciting. My grandma got to work on airplanes, in seattle, and my grandfather, served his country on an island in the South Pacific.

Date: 12/7/2004 5:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    Roosevelt died before he saw the fruition of his declaration of overcoming the attack. What year did he die again?
Date: 12/7/2004 5:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    "--so help us God." I heard these words were scratched from the WWII Memorial when they engraved the speech there. How sad.
Date: 12/7/2004 5:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    "...but will make very certain that this form of treachery never endangers us again." That was 1941...
Date: 12/7/2004 5:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    "To have the United States on our side to me was the greatest joy..." Yes, Churchill had been trying for a while with "secret" meetings with Roosevelt to get the U.S. to help with Hitler before Japan struck.
Date: 12/7/2004 5:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    What was Japan's real motive? To take control of the whole Pacific and expand the empire?
Date: 12/7/2004 8:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 48809    Gypsy Hawk, President Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945 in Warm Springs , Georgia ... I remember it well.
Date: 12/13/2004 8:42:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    I can't believe they left out the words, "so help us God"..or maybe I do believe it, it is crazy what people are trying to make this country into...something it has never been before.
