Isaiah 52: 11 (KJV) Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels (or armor) of the LORD.
In this verse, the Lord is calling to His people who are scattered among the nations to come out, for He is going to restore them as a great nation, His chosen people.
2 Corinthians 6:14 (KJV) Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
In these verses, Paul was speaking in his letter to Timothy regarding separation from the world/worldly things.
I'd like to discuss with the Christians of USM now; how do these scriptures apply to us today? How are we to “come out from among them?” What are some things we are to separate ourselves from?
Does this mean we are go up on some mountain somewhere and form our own little community, not associating with anybody that does not believe as we believe? No, of course not. Jesus said in his prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, "Do not take them out of the world, but keep them from the evils of the world." Therefore, my USM brothers and sisters, we are to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and do what He would do...go where He would go. There might be some places we went before, some things we did that in our spirit we know are not the right things for a Christian to be doing....so we're to come out of that. Stop reading certain things, watching certain things on tv and at the movies, saying certain words we used to say...perhaps offcolor jokes and swear words that we know would be offensive to the Lord.
What are some other things we are to come out of? When the gang at school is making fun of somebody who is different....don't take part in that. When the gang is smoking pot or doing other drugs,...don't take part in that. When your friends want to shoplift for a lark or vandalize somebody's property...don't take part in that. Come out from among them in your actions and in your choices. That's the way to live a happy and victorious life in Christ.
