Piri Reis was a Turkish admiral and geographer in the 1500's. His pilot and slave had been on voyages with Columbus. When the pilot had been captured he had with him a map used by Columbus. Using this and other anceint Greek maps (handed down from the time of Alexander the Great, Piri Reis compiled a world map which shows the coasts of South America, Africa and a portions of Antartica. Interestingly, the section of antartica is shown in an unglacial condition. It is thought that the survey was thousands of years old, Before the land was covered with ice. Daniel Linehan conducted seismic surveys in the Antartic, confirms the accuracy of these ancient maps. Some of the maps show mountain ranges in Canada and Alaska that even the Army map service did not have. These ancient maps also recorded sub-glacial topography of Greenland. It would seem impossible that these could be made without the aid of aerial surveys.
