Police Brutality or Procedure? ~~Angeleyez~~

Hi everyone. I usually try and stay out of this topic, but I really thought this would be a good debate. I don't know if any of you have heard about the man dying in Cincinatti, OH after a alleged "beating" by the police there. If you would like to check out the news article and watch the entire video that was recorded from the patrol car, you can go see it at www.fox19.com

Supposedly the man was causing a scene at a local White Castle resteraunt when police were called. The man was on drugs and proceeded to attack an officer, causing 5 other officers to try and contain the man using their nightsticks. They repeatedly hit the man over and over, yet in the video, you can clearly see the gentleman resisting arrest. The man, Nathaniel Jones, died the next morning after this. Now the officers are suspended from duty pending an investigation. Personally, I think that the officers were right in trying to sustain him. In the video, you can clearly see that he lunged at the officers first. They were just trying to protect themselves and place him under arrest. I think that if they were trying to kill him, they would have hit him in the head instead of the arms and back area. Also, they tried pepper spraying him but that didn't work. I honestly don't believe they were trying to kill the man, only sustain him. So what do you guys think?

Date: 12/3/2003 6:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 62410    I think in this instance, the police were within their right and should be cleared. He was HUGE and he did come at them -- I don't think they had any other choice. But I have personally seen police force get out of hand and be used unnecessarily. For instance - at a peaceful demonstration this year I saw them grab a kid off the sidewalk (who wasn't doing anything - just standing there like everyone else) slam him to the ground, slam his head repeatedly against the ground, beat him with clubs and pepper sprayed him. He wasn't even fighting back -- he didn't have the chance -- he was taken entirely by surprise. That is clearly a case when police force gets out of control. Nathaniel Jones, however, I mean - what else could they have done? Scall
Date: 12/3/2003 7:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    I think a 300 pound man on PCP is a very dangerous piece of work. (I know a 120 pound Woman on PCP can dp some very serious damage.) I am withholding all final judgement until the trial(s), but I am supporting the police on this one.
Date: 12/3/2003 7:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    From what they first showed on TV it looked to be a case of police brutality. They didn't show much of the tape, but just the part where the police were beating him. I became so outraged. Today as I viewed the entire tape, I believe the police had every right to use their clubs against him. They also showed a tape where the man was ready for a fight before the police were even called. I believe the man's thinking was unfortuantely greatly influenced by the drugs he was on but the police had no other choice but to protect themselves.
Date: 12/3/2003 8:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    I doubt you're going to get much of a dissenting opinion on here, if any at all. I think, as I believe most will agree, that the man, described by friends as a "nice, jolly man," who was intoxicated by methanol, cocaine and PCP-- a highly dangerous mix of narcotics-- at the time of the beating and took the first swing at the officers, signed his own death warrant when he decided to put that poison in his body. For pete's sake, what if this degenerate had run into a civilian with that mix in his system? He's happy to put other people's lives at risk, but we're supposed to pity him when he loses his own? Police officers have a right to protect themselves-- anyone who had a friend or family member on the force in that situation would agree-- and the black community should use more descretion in picking their causes and stop standing up for losers like this.
Date: 12/3/2003 8:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    well said Barb & Mollycat!
Date: 12/3/2003 8:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 59876    the news report i got said the man died not of any injuries sustained by the police (those were soft tissue bruises in areas they are trained to use their night sticks on and indicated procedure followed) but rather he died of an enlarged heart caused by his drug use.
Date: 12/3/2003 9:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 62226    I think they should have backed off and cought him like they would a dog ,with one of those things around the neck or a tranqulizer or something like that. Plus those cops hit him at least 100 times each and could have easily hit him in the chest ,stoping his heart.
Date: 12/3/2003 11:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 7830    well...I think 5 nightsticks against one man is a bit much. Some officers do go overboard.
Date: 12/4/2003 2:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 51049    The story I read, said that the scene he caused in the store that caused helped to be called was that he was having some kind of medical problem and not that he was being violent or distuctive. Whatever the case may be, you can't even tell me that 5 or 6 maybe 7 cops could not find a decent way to restrain him. They are trained to handle situations like that, and I know for a fact beating a person with a night stick is not going to help restrain him. They should have all jumped on him and cuff him, and if he wanted to throw a fit after that, than so be it, he ain't goin no where once he's in cuffs.
Date: 12/4/2003 4:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 54570    I saw the video myself. That guy was huge and any law officer will tell you an individual on drugs is very hard to mace or pepper spray and it usually ends up using night sticks to subdue that person. Besides any idiot that would put that kind of poison in thier bodys well.... and I heard on the radio this morn he had an enlarged heart and that contributed to his demise. The officers were in the right on this one.
Date: 12/4/2003 4:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 10722    They were well within their right to subdue him by any means necessary, given the circumstances. He was a large man, plus a drug abuser. Not a good combination at all. Then he dies from his drug abuse.
Natural selection at it's finest. :-)

Date: 12/4/2003 5:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    That tape was shown to different police experts and every single one of them said the Police followed procedure...they said hitting with a night-stick isn't as bad as it looks (although I personally would avoid it). The man had a lot of pcp, cocaine and something else in his system which can make anyone go insane. I really think black activists have picked the wrong case to defend.
Date: 12/4/2003 6:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    To anyone who disagreed, I would welcome you to go out and find a drug crazed 300+ lb. man and just "take him on down". Honestly if a man of that size and in that condition kicked in someones door and they shot and killed him, not a word would be said. But cop beatings are great T.V. and race riots are even better. Jesse Jackson will soon be on the case (if there is some money in it). Al Sharpton is too smart to touch this one.
Date: 12/4/2003 8:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 18104    Well said BCAR, I couldn't agree with you more. I support the police on this one.
Date: 12/4/2003 12:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 53314    Police were definatly right, the guy was tripping on PCP.
Date: 12/6/2003 10:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 51456    no, not policebrutality but its gone over the limit of protecting themselves. fristly, the man brought it upon himself, but they shouldn't have gone over the limit. i think that when is saw the video, i wouldn't be able to control the amn, so i would hit him hard ONCE -shock and while he's in shock put him into a position where he can't move, once he is calm, hand-cuff him and take him away. when isaw the video i think it cul have been easily avoided. Ussually police officers, have training and somekind of martial arts lessons that they could have used instead of beating him with nightsticks to death. sad..
Date: 12/6/2003 10:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 59876    lmao! one hit is not going to faze let alone shock a guy on pcp and coke. it has been documented before that people on pcp have been shot more than once, and still they keep on coming at you.
Date: 12/6/2003 7:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 50435    I'm not even going to read the responses. Brutha was on PCP, looked like the billyclubs confused him rather than hurt him, he was obese, and most likely a multiple drug user. I would guess his diet was very healthy either. Sure, maybe the stress of the attack pushed him over the edge, but if you attack a cop don't expect them to give you a cookie.
Date: 12/7/2003 6:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 22080    and if those cops were "average people" they would have been arrested for murder regaurdless, how sad
