The rest of the summer came and went. By then Ashley had figured out what she wanted and stuck to it. Steve came back and kept his new girl and Ashley was with Jas. It was like one of those on and off soap operas between the three of them. The crew was struggling to stay together. Soon enough though summer was at a end.
It was the last day of summer and the crew was all together sitting up in one of their wooded areas. The sun was shining bright, it was one of those last days before school that you just wanted to be out. They all sat on a few rocks lining along near the trees.
Things between Steve and Jas were still tense but you probably wouldn’t of thought so the way they were able to sit and talk. They seemed to keep it cool probably because they were both on the football team and their coach wouldn’t put up with teammates not getting along.
“You ready for the game Saturday,” Jas asked Steve starting to walk farther into the wood with Antony and Ash.
“Yeah, I’m ready. Fairfield’s defense is going to be rough though. It will be a tight game,” he said back. You can tell it was basically the only thing they would talk about lately. Steve got up with Jess, Michelle and Adam.
They walked as far back as they could till they hit a small stream. Taking of her shoes Ashley stuck her feet in the cool water. Michelle waked over and sat next to her doing the same. It had been the first time the two had seen each other all summer. Michelle had left the weekend Ashley and Jas went to the beach for France.
“So Ash, fill me in here because I think I am missing a lot of details,” Michelle said watching the guys a few yards away throwing stones in the stream.
“There’s nothing much to fill in. I went on a weekend get away with Jas. I called Steve from the hotel to see how things were and found out he met some girl and was with her,” she siad hoping she could end the story there.
Michelle looked at her and then at Jas. “And this whole you and Jas thing,” she said looking back to Ash. “What brought this around?”
Ashley sighed and looked over to Steve and Jas who were talking. “He was there when I was crying and he just lied their holding me. I don’t know what I was thinking at the time to be honest but I kissed him and then he kissed me,” she paused trying to get around details. “I woke up in the morning and went for a swim before the sun came up. He came out to find me and asked me to be his. I said no to him at first but then after the rest of our little weekend I realized I really did care about him. So that leads us to now.”
Michelle looked at her then back to Jas and Steve again. “So where do you and Steve stand,” she asked watching them.
“We stand back where we were before everything,” she said looking over at them to. “Like I said to Jas, I thought I knew where my heart belonged but now I’m not sure but I am willing to take the time with him to find out.”
Michelle just shock her head and watched the guys start to walk off. “I think we should catch them before they leave us or get lost,” she said getting her shoes back on.
“Yea smart idea,” Ashley said putting her shoes on as well running up to them. Jas turned around and grabbed her around the waist twirling her around in a small circle.
They all laughed and started heading back toward the main road. They all joked around on the path back out, pushing each other and talking about their senior year plans. So far only Ashley, Michelle, Adam, and Antony knew anything about the colleges they wanted to go to. Ashley’s plan was to go out to California to work on some photography at a school she found interest in out there. Michelle was going up to Penn State and hopefully Adam was doing the same. Antony was staying local, he already knew he would probably just go to community college for two years that transfer when he saved up some money. For now though, they were all just going to enjoy their senior year once it started tomorrow.
The crew finally reached the road and got ready to head to their cars. “Yo Ashley I’ll take you home,” Steve said looking for an ok from Jas.
“Yeah, go home with Steve,” Jas said kissing Ashley and smiling. “I’ll pick you up tomorrow morning at 7:30 sharp.” Ashley smiled and kissed him back joining Steve to his car.
“So how are things,” Steve said as he unlocked the car.
“Everything is good,” she said with a smile. “Everything is really good.” She climbed into the car and looked at him. “What about you? How are things with you and Kate? What’s been up,” she asked.
“All is good, just having a good time,” he said. “I been looking at schools for next year probably not going to go and either stay around here and work or head out to Denver.”
She laughed quietly to herself, “Yeah, you always had a thing for Denver.”
“Yeah, well it’s beautiful down there and I figured if I decide to go to school. That is if I do go out there. Maybe I can go to CU or some small place in the area. Who knows,” he said turning onto their street.
She smiled, “Well if you do that you will only be a few states away from me if I get into the school I want. So maybe you can come down and visit sometime.”
He smiled a smile unlike anyone had seen from him in a while, “Yeah, that would be nice. I always heard California was beautiful.”
She laughed as he pulled in front of her house for her to get out. “I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said with a smile heading for the front door. “And oh yeah, don’t forget we are exchanging senior pictures tomorrow so you better bring yours.”
She headed inside to her house as he pulled away and went to her room. Wallet size copies of her senior pictures were spread out all over her bed. She had one for everyone and on each one she was going to write a little message on the back. She grabbed a red tip pen off her desk and picked up one writing, “To Jas” on the top of it. She had so much to write but wasn’t sure just what to say. She began to write as the phone rang.
“Hey love,” she heard on the other end. It was Jas calling to see if she got in ok. She laughed to herself. “Why you laughing,” he asked.
“Because,” she said looking at what she was writing, “I’m writing on the back of a senior picture for you and you called. It’s just funny.”
He laughed as well and you could tell by the laugh that he had a smile on his face. “So what’s going on?”
“Nothing really. Just got in trying to write some decent messages on the back fo the pictures for tomorrow. The usual,” she said putting down her pen. “What about you?”
“About the same pictures are done. I didn’t write much on some of them but it works. I have a little something for you tomorrow but you’ll have to wait and see for that one,” he said with a evil little laugh.
“Ok, you opened your mouth now hun you gotta tell me,” she said laughing back at him.
“Nope, if I tell you it won’t be a secret. You’ll just have to wait and see. I’m sure you’ll like it though. Anyway love I’m going to get some things done around here. I love you. See you at 7:30 be ready.”
“Alright. Love you too hun. Have a good night. Bye,” with that she hung up and smiled. What could he possibly have for her that would be a surprise. She sat down and started to write on some of the pictures again. Oh well, tomorrow was the first day of a new year for them and probably one of the most exciting years of their lives.
