Dogs 'executed' for jailbreak. --Underground Tiger

Officials at a prison in northern Serbia have killed two guard dogs for not barking when five inmates escaped, reports say.

Local media reported that the dogs had been "found guilty" of not alerting the guards to the get-away as they had been trained to do.

The two 15-year-old Sarplaninac dogs - also known as Yugoslav Shepherds - were shot dead at the dog pound in the town of Sombor, 150 kilometres (93 miles) north-west of Belgrade.

Local animal rights activists have protested against the shooting.

"The dogs did not deserve the death penalty and cannot ultimately be responsible for the escape," said Branko Pasko from the animal rights group Arka.

The dogs could have been sent into retirement or put to sleep with an injection, she said.

Local reports did not say where the guards were at the time of the break-out.

The five inmates escaped by digging a hole under a prison wall.

Three of the fugitives were later recaptured.

Date: 2/24/2003 6:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    Correct me if I am wrong, but 15-years is an advanced age for any member of the "Shepard"-family, and chances are, the dogs were going deaf. In addition, the fault lies with the guards, not the dogs. The people who shot them are filth, in my opinion. *tsk*
Date: 2/24/2003 6:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    I agree. Dogs are considered well past their prime by age 10. These poor dogs in this story had to have been arthritic, hard of hearing and just unable to really care since they weren't allowed to retire gracefully.

Date: 2/24/2003 6:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    They probably hadn't even any teeth left either.
Date: 2/24/2003 9:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 26452    LSG is right, German Spehards normally don't live that long. I think its like 10 years average for those breeds. Poor things, people suck...

Date: 2/25/2003 4:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    Aren't they the country that did the U-GO? I hugged my old dogs many times through the night and couldn't help but wonder how they dealt with the escaped prisoners. Sad.
Date: 2/25/2003 6:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 6358    I agree with LSG.
