Citrine, also known as Cuddle Quartz, is said to make the wearer feel like they just got a nice hug, as it is used to relieve every form of emotional distress. It is also thought to aid digestion and rid the body of toxins. At one time, it was actually used as protection from snake venom. Locking one up in a safe place is believed to increase one's income.

Sapphire was believed to protect the wearer from poisons and even thought to kill any poisonous creatures that were hiding in wait. It is also said to cure ulcers, cool fevers, improve eyesight, scare off evil, and gaurd against insanity and curses. The ancient Persians believed that the sky was blue because the earth rested on a sapphire.

Having a ruby is thought to instil courage, bring health of blood, protect from sorrow and ruin, relieve pain, and ward off the plague. Some of the more 'out there' ruby legends are that it brightens a darkend room, boils water if placed in a pot, and warns it's owner of impending doom by turning black.

Turquoise has been considered lucky by cultures from the native peoples of the south-western U.S., to the Middle East and India. The stone periodically loses it's colour.. In Muslim countries, this is said to indicate a straying wife. If the stone is given as a token of love, and it fades, so too will the love. In the middle-ages, it's loss of colour was thought to indicate loss of health and vitality. Turqoise is thought to protect horses and their riders, and is often broken if the horse or rider falls, as if to take the injury onto itself.

In ancient times, an emerald's bright green colour was associated with spring, rebirth, and love, and was often used in Egypt for mummification. In the middle-ages, it was used to block spells, curses, give prophecy, and end demonic possesion. It's presence promotes faith and loyalty to friends and partners, and is said to give the wearer a feeling of over-all contentment.

Bloodstone placed on a wound was once thought to stop it's bleeding.

Quartz and Aquamarine have been used in rituals in the belief that they brought rain.

A topaz engraved with a falcon can be used as an amulet to win the favor of powerful people.

If you like to gamble, especially on the ponies, carrying jade may help you win.

It has been said that if you have lost an opal, it will find it's way back, if it likes you.

Cat's eye is also considered lucky for gamblers, and brings common sense to the wearer.

Coral is thought to calm the firey nature of an Aries.

In Russia, it was believed that drinking from a malachite cup would allow communication with animals.

If you have a question, putting a moonstone in your mouth for a moment before you lay down to sleep is supposed to make you dream of the answer.

It's no coincidence that the Hope diamond is considered a curse; diamonds are said to amplify one's true nature, and the Hope's victims were all greedy and selfish...

Although not usually considered a gem, salt is a handy cleanser, and is often found in protective magick. Since it is basically the natural equivalent of Holy Water, standing in a circle of salt acts as a shield, keeping unseen forces at bay. If you suspect your house is haunted, and this bothers you, a sprinkle of salt around your bed, or the whole room, will protect you. Saying a chant or prayer while doing so will also 'charge' it, and give it more potency.

Date: 2/22/2003 9:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    I'm a big fan and collector of gemstones and gold jewelery. I have a lot of Citrine, Swiss blue Topaz, Morganite, and Kunzite; some diamonds and zircons. I'm working on aquiring the rubies....oh man how I love the rubies. One of the most magnificent stones is the Tanzanite; a lavender blue stone from Tanzania. It's good you share your passion with us; give us more. Thanks.
Date: 2/22/2003 9:30:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 28899    Oh, yes, I love tanzanite! Unfortunately, being newly discovered, there isn't any ancient folklore on them.. Unless you count 'Lemurian' legends.. Any idea why you're only supposed to wear it on the right side of the body?
Date: 2/22/2003 9:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 61996    Thinker,I just bought a Christmas stone is that the same as a Tanzinite? Its different colors at different times. They told me the real name when I bought it but (slaps forhead)I forgot.**pony express**

Date: 2/22/2003 11:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 53055    Very kewl. I can stop someone from bleeding if I'm placed on the wound. That rocks. LOL Kewl post.
Date: 2/23/2003 6:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 24924    New stones are being discovered all the time. Recently I saw a stone called a Tashmarine (teal colored stone that really looks like a cross between Emerald & Aquamarine). I also so a red Topaz, that looks very close to a ruby. It is awesome. Then, one thing I have discovered is there are some man made diamonds that are far surpassing the real diamonds in purity and light refraction. It takes a trained gemologist to be able to tell the difference, and even then, many have a hard time distinguishing these Moissinite & Signata from diamonds. They are very expensive, but a fraction of what the real diamonds cost. Diamonds are not as rare as everyone is led to believe. Personally, I will from now on, purchase the man made, for they are much more brilliant and you can own a larger stone for less money that you could if you bought a "real" diamond. Oh, and Tanzanite doesn't change colors, it is as though you took a swiss blue stone (very light blue, but not aquamarine blue which is almost clear with a hint of blue) and infused it with a touch of lavender color. There is no mistaking a Tanzanite. Man oh man, you really got something there, when you place a large Tanzanite into a platinum setting, surrounded by diamonds with lots of facets. Ummmm...*dreaming here* . Has anyone seen a REAL emerald? No, I don't mean those cloudy, opague, green things that you can't see through, but a REAL emerald. tsk tsk, and those dark red opaque things that some people call "rubies"? yuk. A real excellent quality ruby is a pink-red, and is clear, luminous, and dazzling.
Date: 2/23/2003 6:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 24924    Oh, Tiger, I forgot. Have you got into the many different cuts of stones? Mindblowing, really. There are specific cuts that are named after the person to designed it. new ones coming up all the time. One that I saw recently is called the "OMF" cut. Your eyes can't believe it; dazzling, and I saw a large fire opal citrine with the OMF cut. See, the stone is faceted from the bottom, and the stone is smooth (cabochon like) on top, but these brilliant radiating facets and light refraction is coming up through the stone. The kind of cut that makes people set up and say WHAT ever in the world is that? Simply mesmerizing.
Date: 2/23/2003 3:18:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 28899    Sounds like a lovely cut, Thinker. I'm not very well versed in cuts, but I've read that emeralds give the most energy with the trillium cut, light coloured stones should be marquee cut, and diamonds should always be round. That's only for their metaphysical properties, though.. I'm not a big diamond fan (more of a hematite girl, really), but those two, moissinite and signata, sound like they have to be seen to be believed. I think the reason diamonds are so expensive is because of what it takes to get the brilliant gem quality. Not only that only the highest quality make it to Antwerp, but many of them have African warlords to get through. This new certification system is supposed to cut down on those 'blood diamonds' but I don't know... Thanks for all the info!
Date: 2/23/2003 5:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 61996    Tiger,it is an Alexandrite,I have just recently discovered them and love them, but I would like to see the tanzanite and the ionite youve described. Thanks for the info & you too Thinker.**pony express**
Date: 2/23/2003 6:01:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 28899    Here's a link, so you can see them - http://www.gemsuite.com/gemstones/ -it was the only site I found with realistic pictures. Most of the sites I found made Peridot (pear coloured) look like deep Emerald..
