Okay, so it wasn't that close.. about 40km or so.. Here's what I know about it:
Before dawn, Friday morning, two freight trains passed each other, and the one on the eastbound track derailed, causing several tanks of propane to explode. Only two people were hurt. The derailed train was also pulling two tanks of anhydrous ammonia that have not yet leaked; but in case they do, an evacuation has been ordered for a 4km radius, and about 100 people have been temporarily placed in a school. As far as I've heard, if the ammonia gets into the air, and into the lungs, it would not only cause serious damage to the environment, but would put some people in the ICU.
Because the wreck is in a isolated area, and there is little threat of property damage, authorities have decided to let the propane burn itself out, rater than risk fire-fighters' saftey with the possibility of more explosions.
Ya gotta love our disaster relief efforts.. I think I can see the emergency teams lining up at the Tim Horton's drive-through now, lol!
