Peridot has always been considered one of the best gems for protection from evil spirits, and for a time in ancient Egypt, they were more valuable than diamonds. A peridot engraved with the image of a vulture is said to give the wearer of the amulet the ability to control demons, and no evil entity can exist near it.
Iolite, a deep violet gem, appears at it's bluest when it is 90 degrees from the Sun. Because of this use in finding the Sun in any whether condition, the Vikings used slices of it as a compass.
Hematite is a shiney gunmetal black stone, but is blood red when powdered. It was used by the ancient Egyptians to calm hysteria and soothe inflammation. The Romans associated it with Mars, and soldiers would rub themselves with the stone, believing it made them invincible.
Onyx was all but feared in China, as it is said to cause nightmares, depression, arguments and, of course, horrible luck. Oddly enough, it is also most prized as Catholic rosary beads...
Garnets were used as bullets, because it was believed that getting hit with a garnet causes more damage than getting hit with lead. The gems are also believed to guide and protect travelers.
Carnelian was thought to be the great protector, since it brought luck, courage, intelligence, and guarded the wearer from curses, nightmares, and psychic vampires. It also protects others from these things by making the wearer less inclined to anger and hate.
