Do YOU Think It's Okay for Schools to Celebrate Halloween?...*Hollylovebug*

Man... I just got done reading my hometown's online newspaper and this year the school district has put an end to any kind of celebrations recognizing halloween.

The article said one of the reasons the schools stopped celebrating halloween is that, "Religious leaders for years have spoken out against what they perceive to be a holiday associated with evil."

Okay, can I just say... Give me a break! It's an event that is marked by the national calendar, I can't believe religious leaders are able to stop something like that in the public schools.

Used to, the school's in my town had halloween carnivals and festivals and fun things that all the kids looked forward to and I just can't believe they'd stop something like that.

So, what do you think... Is it okay for schools to celebrate halloween?

I didn't put this in the debate section because I feel that it's not a debate... just a discussion.

Thanks!

Date: 10/30/2002 4:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Well next thing you know there goes Christmas. Let me tell you what if my kids can't have Halloween then the "Christians" can't have their Christmas...HUMPH!
Date: 10/30/2002 4:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 56809    Well, I think that as long as the kids can choose to go or not, it should be fine. I mean, I'm Jewish and I still go to Halloween dances and parties.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 53909    Well if they don't want to celebrate Halloween in schools, then they should get rid of Christmas, Easter and any other hoildays. I think that's so stupd, ya know? Of course schools should celebrate it. It's one of the best hoildays!!! Even some churchs celebrate halloween.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 46486    In a way, coming from a student in school.. It should be up to the students.. if they want to dress up or not.. or celebrate Christmas or what ever holiday that comes up.. I do think it is okay for schools to celebrate Halloween.. if some one doesn't want to celebrate it fine be it
Date: 10/30/2002 4:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 18527    Most schools don't do Halloween anymore anyway... I asked Alycia if they had a party last year and she said "Oh yeah we got to do Halloween Math!" no costumes, no candy
Date: 10/30/2002 4:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3395    Ralph, I know... Why not?
Date: 10/30/2002 4:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 28848    I think they should. It's just for fun jeez! People need to lighten up. My son brought home a letter yesterday from his school saying that they were not allowed to wear or bring any Halloween-themed articles to school. I sort of expect this from the private christian school that my son goes to, but not from public school. We are still going trick-or-treating and dressing up at home.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3395    Azairiya, yep.... they probably will get rid of Christmas.... heh heh.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3395    PunkStarChik, I know.... that is stupid and yes, then they should get rid of all the other holidays.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:28:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3395    Mike, that's a good way of looking at it.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:29:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3395    FA, I agree. It should be up to the student.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:29:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3395    Kethria, that is strange that they don't anymore. What is this world coming to? lol. Also, "Halloween Math".... lol!
Date: 10/30/2002 4:30:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3395    ReleaseMe, yeah... it is kinda strange to hear it from the public schools.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 18527    I know I was like math? yuck
Date: 10/30/2002 4:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 38278    Yes. I feel it is okay.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:34:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3395    LOL @ Kethria. Yeah, I think that math would be enough to scare anyone on Halloween.... so, I guess it compensated. hee hee.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:35:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3395    Cool, Flame-On, me too.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 53284    The students need to band together and all wear costumes anyway. What will the administration do?
Date: 10/30/2002 4:36:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3395    By saying "They" I am talking about the school district... not the students.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:36:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3395    Good thinking, WildBob. Yeah, I know... Can they REALLY do anything? I seriously doubt it.
Date: 10/30/2002 4:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 56927    Halloween is not so bad compared to some of horrible festivals we celebrate in the UK. WE have this festival called national "Steal Wallets Day" where we sneak up behind each other and pick pocket. bob
Date: 10/30/2002 5:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 19625    We're not allowed to have Halloween partys either... so we have "Costume and Candy, non-holiday, just for fun" Partys. Oh yes, no Halloween theme at all, just random partys. LOL. It's crazy, but like my Science teacher says "Ya gotta please everyone, including those 3 people who veiw Halloween as 'evil'" *shrugs* The way the world works *sigh* Erin-
Date: 10/30/2002 6:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 39370    I dont get it....what is so evil about kids dressing up and getting candy? or carving pumpkins? I think that is they take Halloween out of the schools because of religous issues, then they should also take out Christmas, Easter and any other holiday.
Date: 10/31/2002 5:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 7849    sure, why not???
Date: 6/26/2013 4:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    I don't see any problem with celebrating Halloween. As long as its done in good fun and no one is trying to get these kids to worship the Devil. Nothing wrong with dressing up for little costume party. I can understand schools banning scary violent costumes though..
