Ghosts have been around as long as humans have, and we hear stories about them all the time. But, what was the first? When did apparitions become hauntings? I'm not exactly sure, but this is the oldest one I've found on the net.
In the first century A.D., the historian, Pliny the Younger, wrote of a horribly haunted house, where, dispite many attempts to cleanse the house, the apparition of a thin, miserable man with long matted hair, and a long beard, wearing tattered clothing, slowly dragged his own chained body, in pursuit of the house's living occupants. These occurences were becoming famous.
This haunting continued for years, until the philosopher, Athenodorus, stayed at the house. His first night there, he settled in to study, by the light of a single candle. Hours passed, and he was beginning to tire. Just as he finished telling himself that the ghost was a hoax, he heard what sounded like something very slowly crawling across the floor, outside his room, and down the hall. instead of fleeing the noise, as it grew louder and louder, he allowed it to find him. He tried, desperately, to hold his fear by concentrating on his studies. As the spirit crawled to him, it grunted and roared, like an approaching storm. As it struggled to stand, it gestured for Athenodorus to follow. He did. It slowly led him outside, to the garden, where it stopped, and soon dissapeared.
The next morning, the philosopher ordered that same spot excavated. Just a few feet down, a skeleton was found; with long hair, a long beard, and bound in rusted iron chains. The body was given a proper burial, and a few cleansing cermonies were performed at the house. After that, no occupant ever complained of so much as a strange noise.
