Ewwy-ewwy-eww!
A Toronto businessman is seeking compensation from the city claiming $1-million in damage was caused when the basement of his furniture store was flooded with raw sewage following Sunday's Papal Mass.
The field of Downsview Park in North Toronto was littered with trash yesterday and so much plastic was discarded that a sewer, blocked with raincoats, overflowed into a shopping complex across the street. Stores were flooded with raw sewage, in some places at depths of 10 to 15 centimetres.
Gerrit de Boer, president of the Idomo furniture store, was up all night cleaning the sewage from his building. His floors are covered with solid waste, as well as diapers and toilet paper.
Mr. de Boer said he will throw out everything -- more than $1-million worth of goods -- and have the facility inspected by city health officials before reopening, sometime next week.
