Decriminalization of Cannabis

  Author:  54987  Category:(Debate) Created:(7/11/2002 8:01:00 PM)

I've just heard today that the personal use of cannabis has been decriminalized in England. This is amazing news. Dealing in cannabis has not been decriminalized, just having a personal stash. This seems to be crazy in my view, but I would like your opinions on the subject. Do you think decriminalization is a good thing, and why? And, do you think this will ever happen in the States, and why?

Date: 7/11/2002 8:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 31048    Actually, I heard they are already on the way to legalizing it in Nevada! I'm kind of on the fence on this one..I know a lot of people will disagree with me on this but I think pot is OK for most people in moderation. Then again, there's always a downside to smoking anything. Anyways, I think eventually it will be legal pretty much everywhere..good post
Date: 7/11/2002 8:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 15394    Nevada Ballot in November... up to three ounces legal.. currently it is a minimal offense and fine.. what I don't know is how is Nevada gonna decriminalize it, when the Federal Govt is still considering it illegal... hmmmm
Date: 7/11/2002 8:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 33922    Hummmmmmm..I hope not, nothing against what people do in their personal lives, but, this is a drug that affects everyone differently. I feel it should be Controlled.
Date: 7/11/2002 8:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 19092    I say get the Federal Government out of the states!!!!
Date: 7/11/2002 8:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 7654    It hasn't been passed yet in Georgia, This was started with the Nixon Administration, also called "The Shafer Commission".I think it was passed in Alaska, California, Colorado, Nebraska, New York and North Carolnia. But then some were voted on again and they decided to do away with it, So I am not sure what states still have it. The reason that it was voted on was to untie some court casses that were backed up in order to allow the authorities to work on more important cases.
Date: 7/11/2002 8:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 50435    Decriminalize it for ALL purposes, slap an obscene sin tax on it like we have on liquor in Canada, and lower my taxes...LMAO...Gallytuck.
Date: 7/11/2002 8:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 15394    Nevadans for Responsible Law Enforcement is the name of the group that got the required number of signatures for the measure to be on the November ballot.

Date: 7/11/2002 11:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    they should do this in the US cannabis is not physically addictive nor can you OD from it and for those of you who call it a gateway drug the only people who go after harder stuff are those who wanna try harder drugs in the first place
Date: 7/12/2002 8:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 54196    Larry Hagman (from Dallas fame) wants to be shoved in a woodchipper, sprayed over a field, to grow marijuana in, to make a cake, for his friends to eat. I'm not kidding. He likes pot and wants it decriminalized to. How can you argue with Larry Hagman?
Date: 7/12/2002 10:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 55376    What Iwould like to know is why did it take Amendments to ban and unban alcohol but the federal government obtruded into a person's right to use cannabis, cocaine, etc without following the proper processes. Og
Date: 7/12/2002 10:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 29928    Alcohol def causes more problems than pot does.
Date: 7/12/2002 8:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 17525    I have no problems with it. It's not physically addictive, unlike the LEGAL drugs such as alcohol and nicotine. JMO
Date: 7/13/2002 1:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 22080    osiris you forgot caffiene
Date: 7/14/2002 10:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 57957    Yes cannibus should be decriminalized in US. When our federal government lumped cannibus into the same drug catagory with LSD and HEROIN they placed an enormous tax burden on the American people and waged war on thier own citizens! Money has actually been taken from Universities to build more prisons! Child molesters get shorter sentences than pot smokers. We can't afford the useless war on drugs let alone the needless war on cannibus users. All the money being spent on the war on our own citizens should be spent to HELP them. How do you help a citizen with a drug problem? Free medical/and or mental treatment, real job training so that they can quickly recover and get to work supporting the millions of children affected by this social problem. Thier families should be able to commit the to medical treatment facilities the same as we do with mental patients. Emphasis on medical treatment and real education would empty the jails and make room for the violent criminals AND create countless new jobs. Marijuana however is NOT a hard drug and cannibus use should be treated the same as alcohol use. Wake up! If you want to pay to keep pot smokers in prison and to care for their families while they are away-GO AHEAD, pay for it out of your own pocket but don't ask me, the American taxpayer to fund this horrible injustice to our own citizens!
Date: 7/14/2002 6:10:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 54987    Well said 57957! Thank you. I have heard from other people that cannabis isn't a violent drug. Not like alcohol. I am personally against using drugs of any kind, but I must admit that I like a glass of wine (or two LOL). I only fear, like cigarettes, that they will cause new illnesses. There was some research done on long term use of cannabis with regard to cancer. I will look it up and post again. Thank you everyone for your most valuable contributions to this post. Coolade
Date: 7/16/2002 9:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 49021    I think that too much emphasis has been put on marijuana in the first place!
It isnt as addictive as alcohol or crack or even cigarettes for that matter. They call it a gateway drug well it wouldnt be if it were legal! The urge to do it stems from the fact that it is illegal and "wrong" to smoke pot so i say if it was legal not only would thew government make a huge amount of revenue from it but also save billions of dollars that they spend every year on busting the dealers that they could be spending on the real problems like heroin crack and other physically addictive and life wrecking drugs!
