--1. Scientists have identified over 200 distinct
breeds of cats.
FALSE. They've identified only 100 distinct
breeds.

--2. In ancient Egypt, cats were killed as part of
worship rituals.
FALSE! Just the opposite! If you killed a
cat, you were put to death immediately!

--3. During the Middle Ages all over Europe, the
cat was honored and praised.
FALSE! During the Festival of St. John, cats
were even burned alive in town squares! They
were associated with witches and evil things.

--4. In Great Britain people believed that black
cats bring good luck.
TRUE! This is just the opposite of what we're
accustomed to hearing about the much-maligned
black cat.

--5. The very first cat show was held in London,
England.
TRUE! It was held in 1871 at the Crystal
Palace of London.

--6. President Dwight Eisenhower was one of the most
cat loving presidents to ever live in the White
House.
FALSE! The exact opposite is true. In fact he
banished cats from the White House and ordered his
staff to shoot them on sight if any came onto the
grounds. Really, now Ike! How could you!

--7. The largest litter on record consisted of 19
kittens.
TRUE! (holy meows!) They were delivered in August
1970 to a four year old Burmese named Tarawood
Antigone. Unfortunately, four kitties were stillborn.
Out of the surviving fifteen, there was only one
female.
