Are families of WTC victims being Greedy?

WTC Fund Backlash Vitriolic e-mails accuse victims' families of being greedy By Stephanie Saul STAFF WRITER

January 26, 2002

Less than five months after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, a backlash of venomous e-mails and begrudging attitudes is hitting families of the victims.

This new negativity appears to stem from media reports of how much money families may receive from a federal compensation fund, which itself has prompted complaints that families won't be compensated equitably.

Steve Push, treasurer of the organization Families of September 11, said Friday that his group has received about 30 vitriolic messages via e-mail.

"Every time I go on TV or I'm quoted in the press as criticizing the regulations, I get a handful of e-mails from people saying, 'Steve Push, you greedy --- ... you should rot in hell,'" he said. Push's wife, biotechnology lobbyist Lisa Raines, was on the hijacked jet that crashed into the Pentagon.

Kenneth Feinberg, the fund's special master, has estimated that average payments will be $1.65 million.

The average compensation figure, however, does not take into account the deductions of so-called "collateral offsets" such as life insurance, pension benefits and Social Security payments. According to Push and others who have analyzed the plan, those deductions are likely to greatly reduce the average payment for some families.

The backlash against victims' families also emerges in some of more than 2,000 letters and e-mails filed with the Department of Justice during a public comment period on the compensation fund.

"Mr. Feinberg, you can't give in to these greedy people," reads one message, purportedly from an ex-wife of a victim who complained that the victim's new wife would get too much money. "Enough is enough. Stick to your guns."

Another critic wrote, "It makes me sick to think that all these great men and women who were just doing their jobs are being remembered by greedy family members trying to get paid for their death."

Names aren't included on the Justice Department Web site where the comments are posted.

Push said complaints about the compensation plan by his group and others, as well as Feinberg's promotion of it, seem to have prompted the backlash.

"When people think we're going to get $1.65 million and we're still complaining, they think we must be greedy," he said. "What they don't realize is that many families are going to get much less.

"The typical victim is a widow at home with two young children who's been out of the labor market for five years," Push said. "She's going to be lucky if she has $40,000 a year to spend. Yeah, she could sell the house and move into an apartment. She could put the kids in day care and get a job. Why should she have to do that in order to subsidize the airline industry?"

Push pointed out that the compensation plan, part of an airline bailout package passed by Congress, was created largely to shield the airline industry from lawsuits.

Feinberg, who is to release the plan's final next month, said, "I think this backlash is extremely unfortunate. The families don't deserve this."

Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), who has urged generous benefits for bereft spouses of trade center workers, said he, too, has received ugly messages.

Some of the mail is venomous in tone, King said.

"It's really bizarre. It's 'The hell with these people. What do they want?'" he said. "I would say that probably the tide is going against the families."

***So, a widow can't make it on $40,000 a year? I don't understand what these people want. I feel bad for them, but the American puplic was more than generous. We opened up our wallets and gave them 1 billion dollars in donations. Now the government is giving millions more of taxpayer money to prevent them from sueing the airline industry (why they would sue when the airlines did everything to regulation is anyones guess). I hope I don't sound cold hearted, I still feel bad for the families, but what about the military people who are loosing their lives? Their families will receive $200,000 dollars, you won't hear those families whining about money I can asure you....Kelly

Date: 1/26/2002 9:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Another point I'd like to make, the famlies of the firefighters who died are well taken care of finacially, Their families will receive FULL pay and benifits for the rest of there lives not to mention life insurance and whatever they recieved from the sept 11th fund. I think this is all just sad...Kelly
Date: 1/26/2002 9:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    so are you saying that the military families shouldnt get that 200,000 cause i know one things for sure the military doesnt pay the person in the military that much and you know the families that had people in WTC were getting enough money to live comfortably
Date: 1/26/2002 9:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    I totally agree with this post and I have stated before that becoming a millionaire over the death of anyone should be enough "compensation"...its not going to bring them back...I am sorry but $40,000 a year supports my family of FOUR...THAT'S LIFE!
Date: 1/26/2002 9:18:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    My husband is in the military, that is what he would get..most of the people I know have the same insurance which we get at a discount through the Military...Kelly
Date: 1/26/2002 9:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    Was very strange, I have never won the lottery even though I played for many years, I won the very week after 9/11/01 and gave it all to the Red Cross. I have no idea who recieved the benefit of it and gave it simply because it seemed like what I needed to do at the time, (my husband thought I could have kept some) point is, donations made should go to the survivors, that is what the money was intended for, we gave from our hearts, the government should not be involved at all. Those who are acting from greediness and hoping to prosper from the loss of a loved one get no more sympathy from me.
Date: 1/26/2002 9:20:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    With 1 billion in funds, Insurance policies etc, i'd say most are getting enough, maybe not to take a cruise to the carribian twice a year, but enough to help support themselves....Kelly
Date: 1/26/2002 9:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Kelly let's not forget that every child that lost a parent in this will also get a full paid college education to the college of their choice...so there goes worrying about how to provide college education in the future wouldn't you say? LOL
Date: 1/26/2002 9:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Let us just take the widow of a NYC fire fighter. She will receive his full pay and benefits for the rest of her life. So actually she lost absolutely no income....She will be paid his insurance policy in full, and see the money from the disaster fund....oh did I mention she has SIX kids that all have a full paid college tuition now?...Just putting away one of those 3 sums of money into an account would produce enough interest in a year to live off of...I think she she is financially secure...
Date: 1/26/2002 9:34:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Azairyia, I had no idea the children were getting college funds on top of everything!! Also to add to the goody basket, families are receiving free health care for a year, but they are demanding more...Kelly
Date: 1/26/2002 9:36:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Also, if the firefighters widow remarries she does not lose the income the way a social security beneficiary would...Kelly
Date: 1/26/2002 9:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 28193    I read somewhere, where a man said that he wouldn't have donated any money to help out the victims families, if he had known he was helping them to become millionaires. People were "crying" all the way to the bank.....~Golden Taxi.
Date: 1/26/2002 9:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 46515    kelly you have a point, but grieving people are hard to satisfy, because they are (most)in pain, and nothing will ever fill that void. They think money will because i'ts the only tangible thing they have to hold onto. I also do not understand how anyone can sue about the constuction of a building when planes flew into it. Grieving people are not often thinking logically or with reason. I do hurt for many of them though.LYNDY
Date: 1/26/2002 9:51:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Lyndy, you are right, maybe this is the only way they feel they can control the situation. But I think it might make some people a little more cynical about giving money for something like this in the future...Kelly
Date: 1/26/2002 9:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 8428    1.6 million is enough. gee our economy is bad enuff but some of these people ask for more and more
Date: 1/26/2002 9:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Lyndy no kidding I was watching a show on the WTC and actually the man that designed the building said that they were strong enough to withstand an airplane hitting them....he was 100% absolutely right...the planes did not take them down the planes didn't even fly through them! The extreme heat melted the structure and there is nothing in this world that is man made that could have withstood that much heat...
Date: 1/26/2002 10:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    I don't know if this is true or not, but I saw several articles that speculated that if aspestis (sorry about the spelling, it wasn't in my dictionary) had been used for the installation, it would have prevented the building from collapsing..I think the government wants to prevent lawsuits from being filed against the airlines, for what I don't know. The terrorists didn't smuggle anything aboard that wasn't within FAA regulation...Kelly
Date: 1/26/2002 10:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 34476    Asbesthos is a harmful substance... even if the WTC were originally built with it, it should have been removed and replaced with something much safer by the mid-80's or '90s. (Also, unfortunately, alot less fireproof)
Date: 1/27/2002 1:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 30229    I have opinions of this money thing... but I also have to say that since I didnt lose a husband, wife, kid, or parent in the tragedies then MY opinion isnt worth much. I sent money to the Victims and I would get very angry if the money went anywhere EXCEPT to the victims families... A HUGE ammount of money was donated to the families of the victims and I believe that MOST people would get upset if the money didnt go for what they intended it to... And ONE more thing here, the money is there, and if those families dont get it then the government will... Now do we REALLY want this???? I sure dont...

Date: 1/27/2002 5:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 10146    Well I have 6 who live in my house, and last year my income for this household was $25,000. I no because I lived it, and just got the tax papers to file with IRS to prove it. We did not recieve "ANY" welfare support either. So Do I think $40,000 a year income is a good income? Based on my Income, need I say more? Do not forget either, The Familys of Victims do not have to pay Taxes for the next two years, according to what I heard Bush say on the News. But just wait, if People think that we, Or THEY (the tax exempt familys)are not going to ever have to pay back to the Government the Tax dollars Bush returned, well You better "THINK" again! Wait untill the Third year rolls around. I Imagine we (The American people) will be paying back all that was given back to 911 family victims, with Interist. Uncle Sam don't give you nothing, without taking somthing back.
Date: 1/27/2002 7:22:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Gail, the issue isn't about the money given to charities, Americans voluntarily sent that, and that money should be used for the victims...the problem for me starts when the government gives TAX money on top of the donations the American public has already given....Kelly
Date: 1/27/2002 7:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 5940    You know what I would like to see? The Government which had frozen all the financial assets of those involved with this tragedy, take those assets and use it to aid the victim's families and help re-build. JMO
Date: 1/27/2002 3:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 22721    There are probablt some greedy ones, but the ones who lost a family member due to terrorism deserve a little something.
Date: 1/28/2002 3:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 48962    I agree that the attacks were the worst thing I had ever witnessed in my life. However, I am also coming from a different view. I moarn everyday the lost lives. I also worry with sleepless night. My husband has worked for American Airlines for 13 years. When the attacks happened he was demoted along with hundreds of others. We lost on average 1000.00 a month due to the low air traffic and all the layoffs, his hours were cut. What gets me is how many people were affected but not many were dealt with. We did not receive any help from the government. Our first low paycheck we went to our apartment rental office to try to get an extension and were turned down flat in 2 seconds. We had a Christmas for the kids thanks to the help of loans from our parents that we are still repaying. So, yea.. I get a ping inside when I think that the family members are becoming rich from this. Death happens everyday. When my father dies, I did not even have enough to pay for a funeral. Oh but I did get my 200.00 from Social Security.. As sad as it is, If I knew of a future attack, I'd plan to be there myself. At least my kids would be taken care of for life.

Date: 1/28/2002 5:38:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    DreamerJoy, unfortunatly if another attack happens I think some people will think twice before giving money. I'm sorry your husband was demoted because of what happened, but you are doing what most people have to do, you get help from family members. You're not looking to the Federal Govenment for help....Kelly
Date: 1/29/2002 1:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 48962    I was just watching Rosie today and had to think of this post. She just gave 2 sets of tickets for the superbowl to 2 WTC families... What gets me is I would rather see something like that go to a poor family that has a football fan who is terminally sick. Something like that.. Guess it's just me..
