In 1944 a number of people in the town of Mattoon, Illinois, got up in the morning feeling ill. Some reported severely upset stomachs, while others complained of a temporary paralysis. Doctors could find no obvious reasons for their illnesses. The possibility that the illness might be caused by some sort of noxious fumes was discussed, and the afflicted homes were checked for escaping gas. Everything appeared to be normal. Yet the reports of the mysterious illness continued. Then a rumor began that someone had awakened during the night and seen a strange figure in a tight-fitting dark suit and wearing some sort of gas mask standing outside the open window. The figure was spraying a gas into the room, and the gas made the person feel ill. When the figure saw that his victum was awake, it fled. During the scare, there were several other reports of this figure dubbed the 'Mad Gasser of Mattoon'. No 'mad gasser' was ever found, nor was there ever a full explanation of the strange illness. Some psychologists put the 'mad gasser' scare down as a classic case of 'mass hysteria', and say the hysteria itself caused the illness. Others, including the more radical Forteans and UFO buffs, suspect that there really was some sort of 'mad gasser', but that he was a creature from another world or another dimension. Why was this creature gassing people in Mattoon, Illinois, in 1944. No one will even venture a guess.Encyclopdeia of Monsters,p.206. 32 DEGREE How it changed my life:If it's not 'Spring Heel Jack', from the 1830s London, to the character cited above, there is always something weird going on out there if you take the time to look for it or maybe you shouldn't look too closley because you might find it.Your choice.
