Head Transplants....by Gorm

It is widely known that the heads of chimpanzees have been removed from the bodies of their original owners and transplanted to the bodies of other chimps who had been decapitated.

The chimps were revived after transplant surgery and were conscious. There actions and behaviours were altered, I believe.

If head transplants are possible with chimpanzees, then they are likely possible with people. If a person's body was sick & dying, would it not be a good thing to have the person's head removed and attached to the body of a donor who lost their lives to head injuries, but whose bodies were healthy.

Would you be willing to have your head transplanted? Would you be willing to donate your body (below the neck)?

Gorm

Date: 12/20/2001 5:04:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Yes, it would really take some getting used to, to either have a new body, but the same old head...or to get used to a loved one having the same old face but a new bod.
Date: 12/20/2001 5:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 11091    I think its cool. It could save lives of those who are dying from cancer by using the body of someone who is brain dead.
Date: 12/20/2001 5:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 15033    hehe!!! ^^ I think the owner of the head would pick where the body would go to live. But you know, that would be a good debate... who would have rightful ownership? Like could the family of the decapitated man say what the new head should do since he's using their relatives body? Naw, it wouldn't be like I could walk up to my friend's body with the new head and the body would know I was someone familiar...or would it? You opened a can of worms here Gormy...would you like some hot sauce for them?
Date: 12/20/2001 5:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 44326    eww, that sounds kind of disturbing...it would be one heck of a scar!
Date: 12/20/2001 5:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 22852    Well now theres a thought..
Date: 12/20/2001 5:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 42792    It's kinda sick but I would do it, I guess. Why not? I have Lupus and I am ill from it. eventually it will attack my organs and I will die. I have kids and I'm young. I wisj I could do something like that, I guess. I'm not sure. Good post though
Date: 12/20/2001 5:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 44960    Oh, What the heck!...Sure why not, as long as its attached to a female body, then I could deal with it
Date: 12/20/2001 5:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 33088    First off, it is impossible to transplant chimpanzee heads. You sever a spinal column completely, it don't matter if it's human or chimp... But, I'll play anyway, with Thunder's idea of whose identity is it? Could the "head" be sued for child support for kids the "body" created? Could "head" claim the work history, university degrees etc. that "body" experienced or obtained? If body achieved something of significance (say, got an Academy Award) could "head" have bragging rights? Can "head" claim affiliation with say, an exclusive country club that "body" used to belong to? If "head" and "body" were both married, which gets charged with bigamy? If "body" had a criminal record, does head now have one too? Oh, I could dream up a zillion lawsuits, and wild movie scripts with this idea. Lucky for us, it's an impossible idea. But fun, anyway.
Date: 12/20/2001 5:39:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Yes, Thunderhead. Pass the Tabasco sauce, please.
Date: 12/20/2001 5:42:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Ms.Priss, maybe a male head could me transplanted to a female body...and vice versa.
Date: 12/20/2001 5:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 15033    Man, you might be inheriting all kinds of incurable physical flaws too...and what about the true stories of organ transplants that have shown proof they were imprinted with the mental personality and memories of the one that donated? One guy had full recollection of the life lived by the man that had died and donated his eyes, or was it liver..anyway, what if the body had a mind of it's own, so to speak? Started making you crave ice cream in the middle of the night from a deli in another city? Hmmmm.
Date: 12/20/2001 5:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Amaranth. Maybe the fact of chimpanzee head transplants is less well-known than I thought. I'm not necessarilly saying that the body could react to brain commands. I think what happened was that heads and bodies were joined physically. I think this procedure needs some work before it could be applied to humans.
Date: 12/20/2001 5:51:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Cloud Friend, you mention something I've heard about: Recipients of donated organs inheriting traits of the donars. Yes, a completely donated body might really affect the personality of the head.
Date: 12/20/2001 5:52:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    ....ya know something!? I think clones are a better idea.
Date: 12/20/2001 6:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 15033    One more thing.. what if you got a body of a guy or girl that was, well, promiscuous...and all of a sudden it started recognizing some of their dates on the street...your with your wife/husband, and all of a sudden you get the urge to be with someone that walks by again...Man, I could just see the person looking back at their mate at the body is walking after someone else, yelling, "honey, I can't seem to turn this thing around!!"
Date: 12/20/2001 6:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    Remember what the door mouse said, "Feed your Head!" If my head can be of any use after the body is croaked, by all means "take the head." Better a head, than dead. One heck of a post, Gorm. I liked it. Write on.....
Date: 12/20/2001 6:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 10722    That's pretty sick, and that's all I'll be saying on this subject.
Date: 12/20/2001 8:17:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Yes, I can see that by most of your responses that most of you think that head transplantation might be problematic. I tend to agree.
Date: 12/20/2001 8:20:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Forget head transplants. I'd rather be cloned than transplanted. Bring in the clones!
Date: 12/20/2001 8:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    No, I;m not willing but I would think my hubby would be thrilled. LOL No really are these monkey able to walk?? or are they paralized? You would think that to sever the spinal cord would make it so this monkey and or person would forever be paralized??
Date: 12/20/2001 8:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    No, I;m not willing but I would think my hubby would be thrilled. LOL No really are these monkey able to walk?? or are they paralized? You would think that to sever the spinal cord would make it so this monkey and or person would forever be paralized??
Date: 12/20/2001 9:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 43655    I think that the chimps were alive both in their heads and in their bodies, but that the brains could only.....well, I don't know much about this. I would like to have more information. -Captain Skeezix-
Date: 12/20/2001 10:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 43655    I also would prefer to be cloned. In fact I am a clone. Hehe! -Captain Skeezix-
Date: 12/21/2001 8:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 16671    """"sorry for the double post""" but i just went through a head transplant and the dang brain isnt working just right. Plus I had to have the lab rat type this as i'm paralized. have a good day and please disreguard the mouse *tracks* on the floor.
Date: 12/22/2001 11:37:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    That lab rat is certainly a smart one. I guess from hanging out with all those scientists. No problem about the little tracks. If they were big ones I would be worried.
Date: 12/22/2001 11:41:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Hehehe! Hey how about a human head transplanted to a chimp body, or a chimp head transplanted to a human body?!
Date: 12/22/2001 2:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    I'd rather have my head on a big fat elephant so I can squash people. lol, not really, I'm mrs nice guy.
Date: 12/22/2001 2:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 160    Everytime I see something written by you I have to smile because it will always be a unique perspective on things. So I read your post and I am still smiling at the many prospects that this would open up. On a very serious note though I have to say that people are so afraid of death and dying that they may go to drastic measures to save a life probably their own. If I had this as an option with someone close to me or myself I would say that I would prefer to die because I am unafraid of death and am quite sure that the resurrection promised by Jesus will be a real event on earth in the near future. There are also some things that humans must NOT mess with, I believe this is one of them.
Date: 12/22/2001 2:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 160    By the way, are Gorm, TC and Amrak all attached to the same body?
Date: 12/23/2001 8:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 16671    LOL at pammyjo, I was wondering the same thing??
Date: 12/23/2001 10:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 39198    i think ill keep my head right where it is
Date: 12/24/2001 12:55:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Hi, Pamyjoe & Firstborn. Yes, I am a three headed clone. I am also a lizard, as you may know. It is easier for us reptilians to be cloned than for....well, humans for instance.
Date: 12/24/2001 4:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 160    Reptiles love swamp water!
Date: 12/25/2001 6:24:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Chugalug. Makes me wanna holler highdeeho!
